Waste gate rattle??

Been chasing a metallic rattle for months now. Just wondering if this amount of movement is excessive?

N55 turbo is known for rattling a lot, worst case they are cheap to change anyway. just ignore it unless it sounds like the wastegate is about to fly out of the exhaust

Lol, no it isn't. I would love to hear an actual case of N55 WG rattle. It's probably the exhaust flap or a heat shield.

Hey!

I've been hearing some sortof rattle as well. I hear mine when the car is idling in Drive and when I lightly accelerate. Its really noticeable in a parkade or beside a wall as it echos the rattle. I am banking on it being a heat shield but its off that it only rattles in drive and not when its in neutral or park.

Were you able to chase down the rattle? Can you post a pic of your car making the rattle noise as well please?

Thanks!

Still chasing it down but yeah it is exactly like you described. When I got exhaust work done and they guy revved it , I thought it fixed the rattle but it didn't. In Neutral and Park I can't hear it. I'm starting to think it's the transmission but I'm not sure.
When parked there is a rhythmic rattle from the transmission but it comes and goes. One thing I will say thought is when I had MHD burbles on with each POP I definitely hear a sort of metallic slap or tick. And I've had burbles long before and it wasn't making that sound so that's why I'm heavily leaning towards it being wastegate related.

Does this happen immediately after it's started? Or is there a delay?

so my rattle was the exhaust bracket that was mounted to the transmission. the bottom bracket fell off and the top bracket was loose hitting the exhaust! check that

I definitely hear the rattle near the front passenger wheel well. And it's definitely RPM related, and get louder/worse the higher I go but once I let off the throttle the rattle goes away. I've been under my car so many times trying to find the culprit but I'm certain everything in the exhaust is bolted up tight

I have a rattle on deceleration, I hear it specially at low speeds when driving against a structure or wall where the sound bounces off, def coming from the passenger side. now I started hearing this about a year ago when I installed my DP, I had my catless DP checked for leaks after the install and it was all good. I double checked my heatshield before to ensure it wasn't loose and it isn't I couldn't find any contact points. What do you guys suggest? I have been thinking it was the wastegate rattling but I guess from what most are saying, it's not. n55 doesn't have a rattle fix in mhd huh?

+1 , Most will tighten the westgate bolts up a bit. I dont see it solving this movement that much but its a start before replacing the whole westgate bung

Yes, I believe you need a baby 10mm wrench (dont quote me on it i know its between 7-10mm and they sell them at sears as a pack) it'll be kind've tight to get in between but its doable. release the top nut first. then adjust

usually how many turns does it take? or is it case by case basis? turn it a bit then check it out, and go back and readjust if needed?

What if it happens right after it's started? I don't want to hijack or post here but
I have a N54 instead and noticed sometimes on startup there is a odd metallic rattle sometimes.

Before you start adjusting things, I'd try to tape the wastegate rod where its rattling (by hand) to see of it goes away temporarily. Obviously this is a temporary solution.

If it happens upon startup and stays chances are the wastegate might need to be replaced if my resolution doesn't aid or help. but its still case by case. i agree with
