Correct - that's why I have a USB disk that I take everywhere or at least leave in the car.

Still - I'd be screwed if I was burgled and they nicked the car!

What is to stop this Crash Plan service being hacked?
Does not matter if crashplan is hacked and they somehow get my username and password.

As long as you choose the highest secuirty that is. Your files are encrypted (by a key set by yourself) at the client side (ie at your home) before uploading.

The key is not stored on crashplan so they would have no way to unencrypt or read your data.

Of course, it's another option. But how many people would actually be doing this? Most people probably struggle to backup regularly let alone running backups and keeping one off site

Cloud storage is mostly automated. Set and forget. I'll be adding my mums laptop to my account purely for that reason. Shell not have to worry about backups again and I'll get an email once a week with backup confirmation do I know it's happening.

Update...and its not good.

Turned crashplan off this weekend as the upload speed has been running at 400kbs for most of last week (instead of the 1.5mbps it started at). This means the backup would take another 35-50 days - WTF! The extra wear and tear on my NAS will probably put it into an early grave!

I may have to go down Paul's route and leave a usb drive and leave in car . Any recommendations for a 1TB drive?

I use the western digital passport drives bus powered, I've got a 320gb and 500gb and they have been excellent looking to get a 1tb as I've upgraded my hard drive in my MacBook and the 500gb I used for time machine isn't big enough now

I'm trying crash plan at the minute, my broadband is shite at home so I've had to bring my MacBook to work to upload using infinity but it's only going at 400 kbs like yours I'm only using it for my MacBook to back up my photos so it's only 65gb worth of data.

I am on BT Inifinity as, and I did i speed test over to the states and got 4mbs. So something isn't right, but it seems CrashPlan is not a viable solution for baking up large amounts

Will take a looky at Western digital, cheers. A Samsung drive seems quite good value as well.

I've got a 1TB western digital USB3 passport. Good price.

Not had it long but so far, so good. USB3 definitely makes a big difference if the rest of your hardware can keep up.
