I had a professional installer add an xd600 to the hi-fi system in my 2009 e90. I also added a small jl audio sub and alpine amp that I had from a previous car.

I need to know where I should set the crossover settings on the xd600. It sounds better than before but still not really great. I am hoping I can improve the sound with better settings...otherwise I am going to need to replace the front speakers.

Also, the freaking gong sound is louder now....anything I can do about that?

Here are some general guidelines to start with.

Mids in the doors and rear deck 150hz and up
Underseats 150 hz and down
For the gong, first check in the radio settings that it is turned all the way down, then you can turn down the gain on the amp.

I have been messing around with it some and tried your recommendations. Still the front mids seem to distort in some songs--this is without excessive volume and with the input sensitivity turned down. Songs such as Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind for example get a sound like the woofers are just overwhelmed when there is no reason for that given volume levels and crossover settings.

Also I feel like I need a high pass and low pass for the under seat subs...

I guess this is why so many people use an add-on for equalization.

Although it does sound better with more power the OEM speakers
just don't handle that much power very well.
The cheap route is DL-4's and SWS-8's the hi fidelity route is
Morels and Jehnerts .

With the stock speakers the gain on the doors or rear deck speakers should be set to zero
and the under seats should be no more than halfway and probably less.
When I installed my xd and just ran it on the OEM's the with the bass gain set at 11 oclock there was a lot of bass but it was kind of muddy.(from the under seats)
The amp has a lot of high pass low pass settings.
DLS 4's are less than 200 bucks I believe and most have said the stock tweeter in the Hi Fi is not that good.

If you have a sub then there's no need to pump the OEM bass adjustment up. That's where you OEM speakers distortion is coming from.

The OEM woofers and mids should not be doing any bass hard labor at all. I have done the same exact setup as yours with OEM speakers but no sub and it sounds quite great for the price, puchy bass and midbass (last setup was 120Hz HP on the front mids), no distortion. But I do not expect the OEM speakers to give me deep bass at all. They just can't; that's a sub job.

This is a problem of tuning and not of OEM speakers.

Try a little lower on the low pass for the underseats. THinking back on it when I still had the oem woofers, I ran them around 120Hz and below. They did get muddy if they played too close to ~180-200, and at 150 with the 12db slope of the 600/6 their still getting too much signal near 200.

I would disagree. Based mostly on andy w & biggs competition settings. 200hz cross btw woofer and mid using oem l7 drivers. I would not go lower than that unless using steeper slopes and aftermarket mids.

200hz isnt as high as you think it is. For example Most of your bass guitar notes are in the 60-250hz range and you want the 'meat' of those signals coming from the underseats. The transients and harmonics will be higher than that and will emit from the midrange and will give your ears the imaging clues.

Bottom line, as a default, allow each driver to operate in the heart of its desired FR.

Thanks for the input....If I raise the high pass on the fronts to close to 200 hz and lower the low pass for the under seats speakers wouldn't that leave a hole in the 120 to 200 hz range?

setting the input sensitivity down to 0 would also lower the gong volume...which would be nice...I will give some of these adjustments a try tomorrow morning.

Hp and lp at 200

Unfortunayely you really need to bandpass the underseats to put much pwr to them.

hp and lp at 200 and input sensitivity set to zero helped a lot.

Still on certain songs the front speakers sound terrible. I am definitely going to replace them at some point.
