benefits of new valve cover for n54?
I was planning on just doing a valve cover gasket replace .. then I saw rob beck mention there are certain PCV spots that can't breath well and can't be cleaned on the valve cover.
If i were to buy a brand new valve cover .. what are going to be the benefits of that? I don't know if my current one is cracked (i dont think it is) .. and I don't know how much buildup is on it ... its a 2007 with 115k highway miles on it. I'm all for getting a new one if it will prolong the life of the vehicle and make it run better. |

I didnt replace mine, but yes the passages can get clogged esp. from mediocre oil. So inspect it i guess and clean. If the vc looks quite gunked up then replace it, of course that could mean you have one in hand.
Don't compromise and get an aftermarket valve cover tho.

I will only get OEM. My concern is that lack of breathing could cause further issues elsewhere. I don't know how big of a deal it is .. which is what i'm trying to find out. |

Currently 130k mi, chgd vcg ( was leaking) at 110k mi.
The vcg replacement is quite painful esp. for one person. It would be fine if one replaces their valve cover at that time.

i had a ignition coil fail once and it sucked. so i replaced just that one .. then i realized i should have replaced all of them ... so now I just try to do everything as good as I can the first time so I don't have to do it again. |

I would purchase the whole cover. I debated also on whether or not the whole cover was necessary but opted to buy it anyway. As it turns out, my cover was crazy clean inside with no cracks so I sold it and just got a new gasket but better to be prepared.

my plan is have the new one on hand .. check out my old one .. probably still replace it, but if the old one is ok maybe sell it. I'll just make sure it's not warped, cracked, and see how bad the PCV system is clogged .. if that's even possible to tell. |

These things like to crack on their own, and messing with them to replace the gasket makes them even more susceptible to cracking...not to mention the bolts that like to break and the oil passages that can clog. It's worth it to buy a new(OEM) cover with gasket and bolts, despite the price difference.

I remember I once replaced 1 ignition coil because it was bad ... and was told to just replace all of them b/c i was cheap .. then later i replaced all of them b/c i also heard they should all be the same and it's only a matter of time until they go. So i figure even if my valve cover might look decent just because its 11 years old now I might refresh it just so i don't have to do it again for a long time. |
