Iridium spark plugs ??
Hey,
I just wanted to see if anyone has changed the e90 plugs (I am assuming 325/330 are the same) to either Denso or NGK iridium plugs yet.. If so do you have any part #s for the stock plug or either of the iridium models. Thanks

Yeah, I agree they make a good iridium version I have had both NGK and Denso's in my truck and both work well.

Not a matter of saving money.. Its a matter of the car running better, and it would be quite a few burgers..

Probably tinkering for the sake of tinkering. Give it a try and tell us all if you can really tell a difference or not......my guess will be not.....but then again I'd love to be wrong.

N52 already has iridium plugs
it uses the NGK ILZFR6D11 a quick google search on it brings: "NGK Spark Plugs, the leading spark plug manufacturer, has announced the introduction of two new Iridium spark plugs which are to be installed as Original Equipment in the recently introduced BMW 3 Series. NGK’s new ILZFR6D11 spark plug has been developed specifically for the new generation of BMW VVT (Variable Valvetronic) engines. This very long, 26.5mm, thread reach plug will be installed in both the 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder engines which will power the New 3 Series models. These engines will also be used in the current 5 Series and the 3.0 litre version used in the 630 Ci. "

hey question, if you get aftermarket spark plugs, what do they actually do? Does it improve performance at all?

It's not a matter of going aftermarket, since BMW does not use their own sparkplugs, rather NGK...
But let's say you had a Ford, with Motorcrap spark plugs in it... If you buy a set of APPROPRIATE spark plugs, with the right length, right electrode configuration, correct electrode size, and correct heat range, you get better power, better fuel economy, and lower emissions. If you miss on any of those parameters, you get worse power, worse fuel economy, and heightened emissions, and can damage components of the car, like the cat's, or the even the pistons. The cats would get destroyed by unburned or still-burning fuel escaping through the exhaust, and the pistons could get damaged if you had a spark plug with too low of a heat rating melt and fall into the combustion chamber. Spark plugs are serious business. Too bad the "experts" at Autozone (or where ever) don't know that. Putting the wrong plugs in your car can be one of the single most frustrating experiences ever, because you don't realize that's what is wrong. You just wonder why all of sudden you're a slug. |

I've been swapping out NGK iridium plugs (which come std. on many cars nowadays) with Densos....no power gain felt, but better throttle response.
I know Denso makes high performance iridium plugs for N52s that will kick the factory NGK plugs' ass...but I was discouraged due to not knowing how to get to the rear 3 cylinders when facing the engine compartment. The OE NGK iridium plugs for N52 is ILZFR6D11, and it cross reference to Denso Iridium Power IKH20 |

I would stick with the stock NGK iridiums. Not only is a spark plug change difficult on the N52, but I am not convinced that Denso is a better quality product than NGK anyway... I have seen some bad shit happen to Denso produced parts... one good example being the bad issues that happened with the ignition coils on 2003 Yamaha R6 (sportbike) where the denso coils would burn themselves up and bikes would suddenly shut off while riding.... Yamaha ended up having to source ignition coils from another company for their '04 bikes. I just trust NGK more than Denso.

E90 also uses the Bosch Iridium FR7NPP332, which was specifically designed for the N52
Infact, the couple plugs I have seen out, where all the Bosch one here

I remember reading somewhere in some other post that it was contributed to some poor modifications and that it was the person overtunning it that caused the coils to out do itself.
