$697 for a oil filter housing gasket??

I got quoted 800 dollars AUD a few days back. The gasket costs 15 dollars or so and they want the replace the oil filter whole housing unit. I'm pretty sure it's only the gasket that needs replacing. I said i'll think about it. What a load of bullshit! Straight after, I took the car to my old bmw specialist and he said " Just needs gasket inside and a clean up " got quoted $160. Now that's more like it

I got quoted around $500 for the oil filter housing gasket to which I said, No thanks. Shouldn't take more than an hour if your a good mechanic, right? Especially a BMW master tech.

My dealership wants $38 for a can of BMW coolant.

Best I can tell, that is double the MSRP listed on Tischer.

LOL wow, yeah i jus bought the gasket for $15 shipped from ebay, gonna get it done with filter/oil change

even $160 sounds like a fair bit hah.. over an hour just for that?

Also, everyone gets that oil filter housing gasket leak. It's minor. I'm just leaving it alone til I get the part online and a Saturday off to do the job.

Even an indy starts drooling when they see you show-up in a BMW.

I find it funny that people get upset when a dealer is trying to make a few bucks and how outraged they all get when the job gets compared to a DIY. If you count in the value of the facility you will use to make the repair, the cost of the tools needed to do the repair, the part cost (with a warranty), and your time, and the value of the intellectual property the Tech knows from being factory trained, it's about the same price. The difference is you don't count all the actual costs you incur to get the job done as a DIY.

A good rule of thumb is that 1/3 of the cost of something on a per hour basis goes to the person actually doing the job. This applies to everything from the dudes that mow your lawn to engineering consultants. If you earn more than this while billing per hour, then you either own part of the business, or you're high up enough to negotiate better pay.

So, let's say a shop charges $90/hour for your car. Reasonable, right? The expert changing out your gasket gets $30 for that hour of work. That remaining $60 goes to keep the lights on, to provide the "free" coffee, etc. If you get a free loaner vehicle (such as at a BMW dealership), there's a good chance that you're paying more than $90, or you're on warranty - in which case you paid for that upfront when you bought your car.

$500 is reasonable for a oil filter housing gasket if they give you a loaner, wash your car, give you free food, and feed you intangible luxuries in the form of marble floors in their customer drive-through area.

$60 is reasonable if you're getting the work done by an indy that has cars stacked up like lego's in the driveway and there's a good chance that he'll JB Weld something together at the end because he stripped a bolt.

DIY costs are obviously difficult to compare with tech hourly costs, but let's be reasonable here...

I'm too lazy to fix it myself. It's too cold out and I don't have the time or tools. It just cost me $770 but on the upside, the dealer gave me a loaner for free. I got to drive around a 2019 X3 M40i for the weekend. I don't want to give it back now. haha Its a beast.

You paid $12 for a gasket and $758 to drive that car for a weekend. That’s probably what the monthly payment would be on it

Is $697 secretly set as a minimum by bmw dealers? It seems so. I Was quoted that today I was like bye going to a local guy for cheaper. They let me walk away, they would not budge on the price or call me back to ok my offer which was not too much less than $697
