Sorry guys for being a real dumbo on this i am not a technical person when it comes to these things.

D:/ is my root USB directory.

Do i move the contents of 3USB to root

and one by one (USB1, USB2 and USB3) in the root put just the pkgdb folder and config.nfm to root so it looks like this:

D:/
pkgdb
config.nfm
3USB [this has all the other USB files]

is this the way? and when it asks for USB 2 repeat process above putting
pkgdb [folder]
config.nfm

to root?

Do i need to generate an FSC update code for my BMW CIC navigation unit first? the start of the thread doesn't mention this?

You can't brick it with a map update, will accept map files and work fine or just not offer update option, even if stop mid process and never complete new map upgrade it will just use older complete map

Yes unless you already have lifetime code. The 8 digit code (0x28 0x38) mentioned in first post is used in map generation process (although I think the map code generators also available do some hand holding and don't require you to know it). Check earlier posts on here or earlier map threads, links to that process is listed

Also once i generate the code do i enter before the update when prompted?

If you have lifetime code, the map will upload. It asks for a code before map uploading.

Ok thanks, so am i correct BMW would not give you lifetime code BUT if someone has uploaded before to my car, chances are its got a lifetime code.
THis won't cause any issues when my car goes into BMW dealer will it?

Bmw will never give lifetime code. Possible a previous owner loaded one, try map update and see. If you have lifetime code and bmw warranty you may have problems if it goes wrong as they'll reject claim if they spot a lifetime code apparently which is why I always create single use codes (bmw replaced my cic no problem on single use codes, no point risking a lifetime code to save a few seconds). If no warranty (and no intention for you or any future owners to get one) then doesn't matter much

thanks all for your help, I updated the maps just a bit confused first time I used car sat nav on a BMW but I take it there is no voice activated directions input? Or the sat have doesn't speak instructions does it?

again thanks for the great help on here especially to the less technical of people (me)!!

For 2010 e90? You mean select left hand joystick? Or options button?

On your map screen so press NAV button it is? Bottom right one.
The controller to left to highlight the tabs on the left, voice is near the top if that makes sense.

The newer maps have things like lane guidance as well if you use directions on the split screen, nice touch. Also you probably don't want the voice directions all the time especially on parts of the journey you know, I set button 3 as a mute button for directions I set button 8 to turn off screen as well if travelling a long way on a motorway in the dark and don't want bright screen in my face! Can combine at will for what suits (eg screen off while drive 30 miles in dark but voice directions on so I don't miss the turn / screen on but voice directions off if I just want to follow the map etc...)
