JB3 at Laguna Seca

I went to Laguna Seca on Friday to give it my best and ended up having a couple stories to tell.
I made the decision to start focusing on having more track sessions instead of just the strip, but it's a lot crazier (that's for sure).
Tracking is such a humbling experience.
I realize how much I suck and how much more there is to learn.

I wanted to see the track before my first session, so I started asking around to see if I could ride with anyone and everyone had an excuse with why not to take me. It was understandable.
So then I asked a group of guys to see if they were in the black group. One guy said "Yah...why?" I was saying that I just wanted to ride with someone to see the track so he said that it should be a problem.
So, I asked, "Which is your car?"
He said that it was the yellow one over there.

Yep, it was a 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.
This was the start of my day.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you guys know that I ran the JB3 the entire time on map 3 and it was flawless. No limp modes at all, and oil temps were maxed at 270-280. Power was great but the driver obviously needed some help. I had an instructor for the first session, but I probably needed the instructor for all of the sessions, because it felt like whatever I learned flew out the window after the second session.
I spun off the track pretty bad, and that killed the rest of the day.
I spent the rest of the day pulling out rocks from places you wouldn't think of.

I really think that most of the time people get limp modes with tunes deal with another issue that is happening with their car. For example, in the past, I took this car to the track and would get CELs, but it had nothing to do with a tune. My wastegates were sticking. I eventually had to get new turbos, and now everything is running great.

The car is ok, and thanks to the gravel...that saved me from going into the wall. That would have hurt.

So, here is a vid of my lap and my wipe out, and I have some pictures of my car with all of the gravel everywhere.
Also, pics of the Lambo.

Great vid! Laguna is the ultimate..gotta get up there one of these days. In regards to the spin....looks like you went off-line obviously, but what's with all the gravel? Thought it was mainly sand on the sides.

Wow that looked like fun! Glad to see your car hold up to the oil temps very well. Too bad your runs ended with a spin.

Curious to what kind of tires you were using?

Nice work getting out on a road course. I have been on Laguna for a track and it is a crazy track. It was raining off an on when I was there which added another element, I very nearly spun in the last corner (13?) coming onto the front straight. The same day a guy did spin, in the same spot that almost got me, and he stuffed his 360 stradale into the wall, he was ok the car was not.

Also a guy took his Boxster into the gravel coming down the hill after the cork screw.

Good times, thanks for sharing the videos.

Sounds like fun! what are your impressions of the cars handling? Can you really tell the lack of the LSD when racing on a track?

I think the LSD would have helped a lot to prevent the 360 on the end.

The LSD helps predictability. The car will, in essence, do the same thing every time. With the open diff depending on the loading on the tires, and a bunch of other crap, the car can act differently each time you come into the same corner which obviously means you have to back off more than you want until you see what the car is going to do.

Driving looking pretty good Mr. 5, you were actually doing Ok at the beginning of the slide, slowly feeding the car a small amount of opposite lock waiting on it to come back...problem is when the car passes the "butt accelerometer OH SH(T point", at which point people start sawing at the wheel. Resist the urge in the future and try to control the rear of the car a bit more with the throttle during the slide and you'll be all set

Looks like a lot of fun.

Nice work!

I love Laguna Seca....my favorite track in the world.

Two tips for you:

1) This is personal preference, but you may be able to pick up a bit of time by doing a double apex (for lack of a better term) into turn 2. Halfway between turns 1 and 2, start moving to the left of the track and start braking at the same time. You will be braking in a straight line but on the track you will be moving from right to left.

2) In general, I noticed that one thing you're doing on a couple of the corners is you're cutting off where the car tracks out after a corner. Don't be afraid of using up the whole track. Let the car go where it wants to go before you gently reign it back in to set up for the next corner.

I noticed this after the corkscrew...you can let the car track out a little bit more to the left before you head back to the right to set up for turn 9.

Same with the exit out of turn 9. You seem to be pinching off and keeping your steering wheel turned to the left after you exit turn 9. Don't be afraid to track out further to the right after turn 9 exit as you may be able to pick up a few mph by not cutting off your turns.

Anyways, good work. I think you did very well.

P.S. Don't worry about the spin. Everyone does it

Nice vids! Just from initially watching the video it looks like you may have jumped off the throttle resulting in a snap oversteer. Been there myself a few times. Remember to use the accelerator and steering input together to bring the car back in line.

Be more aggressive!

I'm kind of shocked your club doesn't require you to have an instructor at all times (unless you are advanced/instructor level).

kinda felt like i had my playstation controller in my hands play GT4.

How much does that cost for a day?

Also, on that slide the biggest thing to preventing the spin out is not letting up on the throttle. It is hard not to take you foot off but it transfers weight to the front of the car.

Overall AWESOME =)

Awesome clip! I've always wanted to try out Laguna Seca! It's so funny because as you were driving it, I thinking of Gran Turismo.

It's always good to get a spin to get it out of your system-my first one was at BeaveRun in Pittsburgh PA where I lost the brakes on my 325is and flew into a corner at 100 mph. I went in sideways and held a drift but then the right side started to lift when I looked over-let it spin and I went off into the grass.

I just don't think I have the balls to take my 335 though-I'd just stick with my 325.

Were you running R-comps?

As a guy who sucks on the track too, one thing I can tell you is that these piggys etc. are no favor on the track to us. Its way to much power. Brakes, suspension etc. all good for beginners (and a good instructor sitting there) but extra HP is not your friend until you are really good.

If you kiss the wall, will the insurance pay or are you SOL? That sober a lot of trackie wannabes IMO. I am curious if you have to sign all your rights away.
