Basic Coding Question...

If I have someone code some features into my 335, will I lose these codes if the dealer performs a software update? I guess what I'm asking is if a software update returns the car to stock settings? Just starting to learn about this coding business.

I'm thinking: windows up with key, sunroof control by rain sensor, DVD in motion, delete seatbelt chime and delete iDrive disclaimer screen.

If the car is coded, if the car goes to dealer for any software update, ALL the codes will be erased and the car will go back to default.

I did a bunch of coding to my car and went through a dealer software update a couple months ago. I didn't lose anything other than some basic iDrive settings like my triple-blink and DRL settings.

Oddly enough; other stuff like roll-up windows on key fob stayed intact. That being said; YMMV.

Then they didn't update your car except fully as it should have wiped any coding done to car

Is there any way to tell, short of asking them, what did get updated? I did notice that my iDrive seemed a little bit different, but aside from that I haven't noticed anything else.

They did the update on my E90 to try and address some random misfire issues.

All the cars that I have coded that came back for recoding, every code was back to default. I am not sure what happened in your case.

Hmmm, that is what I was afraid of. I guess that really makes the case for buying the connector for your laptop and learning to do it at home.

Probably well worth it. I'm just getting into it now and while it games mostly time researching its not too bad if you are decent with computers. I got a cable for 25 bucks so it's really just time that you invest.

Good luck with the 25 dollar cable, curious if it'll work...went through 3 cables before i bought the recommended 100 dollar cable. This one works perfectly.

the 25 dollar one is actually working well. Once i get all the drivers and everything installed. It took a while to do that, and i thought for sure it was the cable, but i tried some other software (BMW logger) and that verified the cable was good. After some digging through drivers and windows i was finally able to get it to connect. Now the hard part... on the search for daten files.... sigh

When you get your software updated, you may lose all or just some of the features. It all depends on whether your module requires to be updated at the time of the software update. If the module does not require an update, the dealerships program will not update that specific module and you won't lose any coding that was done to that module.
