So what's the best way to do this - there's so many conflicting opinions that after 6 pages of reading i am thoroughly confused.

This thread would benefit from a summary.

Did you not end up with a vacuum hose that is now open?
That is bad, kind of like the exact reverse of leaving your garden hose with one connection open. Other connections might get water, but not at the correct pressure and the pump has to work harder.

Plug it with an inch long piece of dowel you run through a pencil sharpener.

Just did the mod, fairly easy and painless. I did get some more rumble out of the stock exhaust but I also notice that the turbo spool sound got a bit louder too. Did anyone notice this?

Are there any BMW gurus on this forum who can explain why and what is the purpose of this actuator and what are the negative consequences of unplugging this? Does the exhaust come out both pipes, all the time or alternate between them? There is obviously a good design reason to have this actuator in there, what its it though?

On a turbo car I can't see the advantage of increasing the restriction by having that valve active at any time but I can see the disadvantage. In any case, saying that this mod is bad for your car doesn't make sense because if it was no one would get an aftermarket exhaust.

I did this and it works.....I just unplugged the connector while the car was running and the exhaust got loud....yumm it sounds good. I have noticed that the car takes longer to get warm.

I did this and the car is definately louder, sounds better. No difference in power that I noticed. However, I plugged mine back in because I didnt like leaving it hanging there. And I also figured that there must be some reason for it... Another consideration is that my car already goes to service enough, I didnt want to add another trip or give them an excuse for something else going wrong.

How do you remove the felt panel? Is it clip-on, or are there screws somewhere (am not near the car)?

Update - did the mod (the panel was just a pry-out, nothing fancy involved, though I recommend trying to pry it out from the deeper end, rather than the one closer to the trunk opening, as the clips there are straight instead of angled). That being said - the sound is definitely quite different. I like it better this way. I can understand why BMW wouldn't do this by default, though - this is NOT the typical sound one expects from a BMW - this is more of an "enthusiast" WRX / Evo / whatever sound. I don't see an average mid-40s family man buying a 335xi and liking this - he'd probably call it "loud", or whatever.

That being said, I paid attention to cars driving this morning: it was a few degrees below zero, so you could easily see smoke - and all the 335s I saw had exhaust coming only from the passenger side. I found it amusing, and realised I never paid attention

Thanks OP!

never mind lol i was puling on the wrong cord.

this "mod" or trick or whatever is INSANE, even if you dont want it i thnk everyone should try it for just a sec and hear how the 335i SHOULD sound stock.

the growl at 1500 rpm is to die for, i was going nuts in my parking lot, i drove it around and felt like i had some crazy exhaust system when all i did was repove a plug.

even though its incredible, im gona drive normally with it plugged in since im gettting new exhaust tips and resonators off next week.

but i give 2 thumbs up, quick, super easy, and super noticible.
