This is the equivalent to Apple selling an iPad with a subscription data plan. Why? I turn on the hotspot on my phone that its included at no additional cost and I can connect my iPad and laptop virtually anywhere much less next to my car.

I love BMWs but just bought a new 2013 Audi S4 (abetter 3 series) and it has T Mobile Hotspot already. It's free for first 6 mths. Totally useless! 90 per cent of time I'm alone in car and it seems like anyone that does ride just uses iPhone connection.
I sure wont be spending a nickel to keep this service going!

That's just bad ass and I will pay for it once it hits US markets. I am always connected for one reason or another. This will be a great addition.

i know lol im talking about buy the bmw hotspot. all im saying is not too many people or none in the US will go for it. they like to have everything in one package. can my phone or tablet do this or can my phone or tablet do that? why carry an extra device when you have something that can do it all and more?
edit: if you have your phone or tablet that can do it all why go for the bmw hotspot? Quote:

ATT properly will block this feature and add additional fee to monthly bill.

So basically it is a normal LTE hotspot (available from any carrier in the US) that has the ability to plug in to the phone dock in the car. I fail to see the point. Like everyone else has said, you can accomplish the exact same thing with your smartphone. :-/

Am I the only one that now wants a car with less electronic crap as more actual driver feel? Who needs LTE in a car that is FUN TO DRIVE guess ill have to go build it myself, i guess this will be useful for someone without a smartphone.

So At first I thought this was amazing but I guess if you already have a mobile phone with a data plan this is useless. This could be cool with families that have wifi only devices.

A smartphone has a 500 mw antenna, has a rather limited battery capacity, and is prone to worse than optimal reception inside a steel/windowed car.
A BMW with this tech uses the roof-mounted 2000 mw antenna, has a rather big battery capacity, and provides the best reception you can get. If you're happy with your wife and kids watching Internet video's over your Iphone 5 connection, that's fine. But don't say this tech/option from BMW is useless. Kids: want to stay in the car, and play, while daddy is shopping for just 15 minutes You: Want to take your cell phone with you, because you want to be reachable. Kids: now don't have Internet connection anymore... You: Reflecting "Damn, BMW was right about offering this option after all..." |

Not sure why everyone is hating on this. I have an iPhone 5 and iPad but would love this feature in my car. Would be great especially for road trips since tethering laptops to iPhone is a sure way to kill the battery really quickly. Plus hopefully this might be even faster since it has a better antenna.
