SUBS: face backwards or forwards?
Which way do you face your subs in the trunk? Towards the back or towards the front? Do you think it makes a difference if you have the ski opening? I'm interested in what ppl do.

As far as which direction to face the subs rear facing is the rule of thumb. Part of the reason that this holds true 99.9% of the time is that the relatively long bass waves are amplified due to reflecting off of the trunk wall and then into the cabin. The only sure fire method is to place the sub in different positions and firing angles until you get the best sound up front. Often times the optimum location renders the trunk a lot less useful.
Having the ski pass through will def make a noticable difference in the way the bass sounds. With the ski pass blocked or not there at all it's like having your sub in your neighbor's apartment. The bass will be diminished and not very detailed. It will seem like no matter what you do there isn't enough bass. This can be overcome with multiple woofers and high power, but that takes up a ton of space and weighs a ton. Ever pick up a box with 2 12"s in it? Pretty darn heavy. If you don't have the ski pass through be sure you go with a good sub/ amp combo to help off set. The better a car is built the more of a bass trap the trunl will be and since we're not putting 2 15"s in a geo metro it's gonna be an issue. Any questions feel free to ask. |

Well cutting a hole in the trunk wall would improve the sound quality of the bass it's a permanent mod and you would still have the seats to contend with. That's up to you, and yes even with the cut out facing the sub towards the rear would all but certainly sound better.

Do you mean the gas cap? If so, you could use some Dynamat on the gas cap to eliminate any extraneous gap space.
