When i boiught my 335d new in 2007 i drove it for 30,000 miles and it was getting 24mpg until i had it remapped and it went upto 26.6. Even driving like a right pussy i never managed over 40mpg even on a long motorway run.

There are clearly a lot of closet virginas driving 335ds.

Christ, I got better than that when I ragged my 135 which is only about 60kg lighter than a 335. All town work surely?

I averaged 18mpg in mine!

There is always a disparity between figures when this topic comes up.

Ive tried thrashing mine everywhere. Even on the meets where I follow everyone else so vaguely the same sort of driving style it would still do 30 - 32mpg

I've never had it low than about 27mpg unless you reset the trip and do 2 miles in town.

I have no idea why such big differences between owners. I like to drive mine too and doing so without going at 140 down the local dual carriageway or going nuts on the a and b roads it will end up somewhere in the 30s usually mid 30s. If I'm trundling to work and back, fairly normal driving with a few full blasts 40mpg is not uncommon. It's impossible to beast it everywhere.

It also all depends on where you drive. The roads I use are normally 40-60mph roads with lots of speed vans, so you have no choice unless you can see a long way into the distance. Not that much stopping either.

I'm on my 2nd 335d and this one is currently averaging 26mpg but this is all town work, but on a run I've never seen it stay in the 40s, usually it's more mid to high 30s and this is consistent in both I've owned

Simple, we are not comparing like for like.

Then there is driving efficiently and/or wasting fuel. Up to 35% of fuel consumption variation is simply the driver, even in the same conditions.

Driving briskly doesn't necessarily mean the car needs much more fuel, such factors as good anticipation, correct gears, keeping the car rolling, all change the consumption dynamics. Over revving a diesel unnecessarily is a great fuel waster.

Also one driver's view of hard driving, is not another's. Same for town or city driving, so so varied.

I know for myself, I don't drive slow, but do drive economically. Hence my 37mpg long term average, in the pre LCI 330d auto touring. My best has been near on 50mpg driving with the flow, through the highlands, worst sub 20mpg on a day in Bath.

I agree pete, but driving briskly whilst conserving fuel is no way as quick as being flat out blatting it. Depends how you wanna drive I suppose!!

And as carlos says, whilst i drive briskly it isn't the same as flat out battering it.

I always get more mpg than my wife and i'm a much quicker driver than her, same car, same roads. I put it down to the fact that i pretty much nail it to get up to speed and then keep it at a steady speed. I've always found this very economical but also enjoyable at the same time and it's the way i drive naturally and always have done.

Obviously if we are extracting the last couple of bhp out of the car, most of the time, mpg will never be making economy marathon figures.

I remember reading an example of a diesel driver, explaining to his mate he could drive the car at faster A-B averages and be far more economical. So they did a trip, each driving their own style. Sure enough the experienced diesel driver didn't lose time but gained over 20% more economy.

As you say, many husband/wife drivers find one driver is far more economical, even if the speeds, etc., don't appear much different. Simple things like hanging on to the wrong gear, not looking ahead, wasting fuel with last minute braking, makes so much difference.

I got the 335d because i would be mortified pulling upto the lights in a 330d and seeing someone else in a 335d. Surely if economy is the key, a 320d efficient dynamics is the answer? i'm sure I've seen crazy high figures for these and will still be nice and pokey if nowhere near the 335d.........

I've run with friends on here with 335i's & M3's.

We have established that the 335d is over a second and a half quicker than a 330d to 100mph.
Get over it, and yourself son.

And in the real world the twin turbo setup gives it quicker in gear acceleration which is what you use day to day.

There is no point justifying why you bought the car, they are both good cars.

Oh I have always said the 335i is the superior car just for the sound, 335d is great due to the massive amounts of torque and power delivery and how rapid it is once rolling.

Nothing to do with superheros but I can't imagine how slow people must drive to achieve mpg like that. I would never drive like a prick and I did do more town driving than motorway but people saying 45/50 mpg must be driving like miss daisy and what is the point of having a 335d and driving like that? I dont get why driving normally on a motorway (sticking to the speed limit) & getting 45+ mpg is so frowned upon on here by some. I dont get 45+ everywhere I go & I suspect the overall average of the car since I have had it is probably nearer 33. My mpg is bang on - it was under reading but I have adjusted it.

Driving at 50/55 gives me shit mpg on the motorway but I find the sweet spot is around 1600 revs (65 ish) when the car stays in 6th which is hardly miss daisy driving just 5 shy of the legal limit.

HighlandPete nailed it about 2 drivers getting different results in average speeds & MPG & there is a knack to getting the best out of a diesel. When I first got mine I was very disapointed with the MPG & found myself driving slower to get better mpg which had the opposite effect but as I have adapted to the car I find it easy to drive fairly quickly & still get very good mpg. Maybe the lack of DPF does add 10% as claimed to the MPG. It certainly made the car feel livelier.

Some of us on here are just chuffed at the decent mpg we "sometimes" get (especially if you have 350bhp) & some are chuffed with their low mpg but they do love to diss anyone who gets over 30mpg
