I check carparts .com and the only thing they offer for my car is for automatic transmission. Mine is a manual. I ended up ordering one from Advance Auto.

How do you know the u joint failed, and how many miles do you haev on your car?
Did you remove the drive shaft and feel any binding or free play? I'm just curious, since I'm chasing down a driveline noise myself and not sure whether I should try replacing the bearing, damper ring, and guibo, or just order a complete driveshaft so I don't have to go through the work twice to access it.

I put my car on a lift and could feel all the free play in the u joint. Mine is at the point that it can go any minute. The other day the rear end started vibrating really bad when i was trying to accelerating around 25 mph and up. The car was fine if i wasnt giving it gas. I started noticing a thumping sound about a month ago.

I had a bad vibration upon acceleration that got a little better the faster I went.

I replaced guibo and support bearing and it fixed it. Just gotta be careful to keep your driveshaft aligned on the same tooth when putting it back together.

Rebuild. Excellent quality. Good shipping materials and return process. IIRC my driveshaft for the E90 was around $250.

Does anyone know if the manual and automatic use the same drive shaft?

The driveshafts are different part numbers:

P/N 26107572907, Manual drive shaft transmission

P/N 26107551199, Drive shaft automatic transmission

Thanks. This is the one I got and that Advance Auto said I needed. I'm trying to figure out if it is the one I need but I can't find anything saying what transmission it is for. Does it look like it is for the manual?

The difference between the two parts is just the length. The automatic driveshaft is shorter, at 57.2 inches (1,452MM). The manual trans driveshaft is 1,539MM (60.6 inches). The part you reference is 56 inches.

What trans do you have. If it's an auto, then maybe the part is correct. All you have to do is measure the old shaft against the new one. It could be just the difference if the 56" is measured without the guibo in place. The guibo is about an inch thick (depth).

Then sounds like you need to return the driveshaft. Really, just get it from Texas; they know what they are doing.

If you don't mind doing the work, get it from FCP Euro. They have lifetime replacement on all parts and based on the design of this, we'll both be doing it again if you plan on owning your car for a long time. I just did it myself. Don't let it stay broken for long cause it will cause other problems…

Garage List
I used an aftermarket / autozone driveshaft for the front shaft on my xdrive... the oe shaft had blown apart under acceleration shredding the plastic covers and severely denting the transmission case and underside of the body...

The autozone shaft wasn't very well balanced and I think has contributed to excess bearing wear on the transfer case and differential.

If I was doing it again, I'd be going to a driveshaft specialist like the one Efthreeoh mentioned. There's a few around Boston I've considered calling up.

Just a note from Driveshaft Specialists... they use the last 7 of the VIN to make sure they ship you the correct driveshaft and inventory 350 different BMW driveshafts. My Type 1 BMW driveshaft was in stock and it arrived in 3 days.
