A/c variable output?

I remember reading that the a/c unit has a variable compressor, does this
Mean that if I turn the temperature dial hotter it will pump lesss
And potentially save fuel?

I know in most older cars, increasing the temp dial
Just directs more airflow over the heater core rather than the evaporator
