I was preparing the car for an MHD tune by finally upgrading to fully FBO, with the parts I mentioned a few posts ago. (And I have a DV+ diverter valve too, I forgot to mention)
The downpipe had been fitted literally the day before and I was out taking it for a run to see how all the new parts were working, and to let the ECU adapt. The car had never felt better, or pulled harder. It was just about perfect. Then in about 10 seconds the oil temp went from 120 to 170 degrees (Celsius as I’m in Australia), I immediately backed off to 80kmh to let it cool down. 5 seconds later I heard a knocking noise for a couple of seconds, the DCT went into neutral by itself and the engine shut off. It could not be restarted. I had no indication whatsoever of its imminent demise. No temp warning on the dash, no gear symbol indicating an issue with the gearbox or anything at all. It had never run rough or had any issues at all. I had installed a complete cooling system refresh a month before as I had a small leak from water pump and radiator. Replaced with OEM pump, all new hoses and a CSF radiator. I love this car as it is spectacular in what I require it to do. It’s my daily, I take it for long trips interstate, and enjoy it every day. It has never been anything less than fantastic since I bought it. Although now I certainly am hesitant to go to Pure stage 2 as I was intending. I will have to build an engine with a closed deck and forged internals. Last edited by Dsinewave; 07-19-2018 at 01:09 AM.. Reason: Mistakenly said US engine builders required my engine to be sent to the US |

wow thank you for sharing. Looks like you are better off buying a used engine. In North America You can find one for about 3500 dollars. Rebuilding will be more costly and not worth it in my opinion.
So Multiple bearings failed because of shavings from one bearing.. We still cant say why that happened. That oil should have been sent to lab to check for fuel/coolant contamination. The oil would have obv been contaminated with metal so that wont tell us much but if you detect fuel or coolant it could have been the issue. |

We've not required this, ever. You simply can pay the core charge if you are out of the country (which we typically option for, as shipping is too much back/forth) Not sure where you got this information from, as I'm the one that responds to all engine related emails. |

My apologies! I was in communication with MMP and assumed that any US builder would need the entire engine, as some parts are re used in the build.
I did not mean to spread rumours or misinformation. Thanks for your clarification, as a built engine with closed deck and forged internals would be an awesome option for me. I’d certainly be happy to pay a core charge. |

Does MMP even build their own engines or do they outsource? I sure as hell would not use anyone who hasn't built a bunch of them.

Yeah that is what I figured. I recall they stole the pictures they use on their site from Motiv so I figured they didn't rebuild them in house if they had to steal pics.

Noob question but what do you typically do if your engine completely shits the bed? Do you have to source a used n55 yourself or do indie shops know how to do this? What does it cost to do a full engine replacement aside from the cost of the engine?

It depends, not every shop can rebuild engines. Typically the most cost effective route is to install a used engine. Install cost also vary depending upon location.

With all of this in mind, I went with a brand new N55 from BMW. It came with everything except the turbo, HPFP, and a few other accessories. I was able to get it at cost for around 11k with a 2 year unlimited mileage BMW factory warranty. I figured considering I was going to hold on to the car, this was the best route to go down.

Yeah, tell me about it...
If it was any other E90 or if the circumstances were even slightly different I probably wouldn't have done it. Though now I have a pretty near to brand new car with a warranty on the scary stuff for the next two years. I enjoy the hell out of the car for a daily too, so I don't have too much guilt hanging over my head for how much I have invested in the damn thing.

Sorry but with the depreciation of these cars I would not spend more than 5-6k max on an N55 engine. If my engine went bad I would just buy another 335i

Eh, I broke in the engine with 1200 miles on the stock tune before playing with the beta maps. It's not like they are/were unsafe in anyway, as plenty of people were running them with no mechanical issues. Plus, the motor is under a warranty for 2 years.
