First real problem with car.. advice needed
Hey guys
Bit of backstory.. yesterday during my lunch break at work I went to move my car and I turned it on and let it sit for a few seconds and it just started shaking.. quite bad actually. I gave it a slight rev and it went to normal, moved the car and went back to work. After work turned it on no problems and drove home fine. This morning I go to turn it on and it felt like it just wanted to stall straight away, started off normally at about 1000k revs but then within seconds just started dropping and fluctuating up and down. Got worse the longer I left it, sounded as if it was about to die so I turned the car off and left it. Tried again this afternoon and same thing. Also both times gave off a real bad smell of fuel. I've had no CEL's or anything I'm gonna try get it to the dealer over the next few days to look at but I just wanted to know if anybody has experienced anything similar? and can you guys please give me some direction as to what you think I should be looking at first? Just don;t want my dealer to fuck me around while I spend hundreds/thousands of dollars without fixing anything Last edited by /335; 03-22-2016 at 06:01 AM.. |

Wouldn't bother with a dealer, go to an Indy like Advan or whatevers convenient.

Hmm only you can know how far you can drive it, worst case you need to get it towed, the closer you can get it, the cheap the tow will be.
I had mine towed from Wollongong gong to Sydney, it's a few hundred. |

Test it like this (from personal experience)
- the problem should only occur when cold start - once the car is warmed up at around 1-2mins into the drive the stuttering should stop - read codes, should be 29E0 fuel mixture code I ended up driving the car for quite some time before fixing it.. did end up being injectors |

Sounds like injectors. Depending on how bad it is, could be anything from just a leak to fully stuck open. I had a mate with a completely stuck open one. One cylinder just wouldn't run and the car was virtually undriveable. There was fuel literally dripping out of the exhaust.
If it's anything like that don't drive it. You'll destroy all your cats. If it's just a bit leaky with some stumbling that goes away, should be fine to drive. But if it doesn't go away it's leaking pretty badly.

A dealer is gonna rape you for injectors lol probably 2k a set alone. Take it to a regular mechanic to replace, then get vtl here to code them remotely for you.
I am about to have my injectors taken out and replaced if you want a cheap second hand set. I am only replacing them out of preventative maintenance because I amabout to double the power of my car. Either way, you should be ok to drive it to the dealer without causing too much damage, but I would still have it towed if I was in your situation. Where abouts are you located? Which direction 1 hour out of Sydney? |

I'm in Wollongong
I'd prefer not to use BMW Wollongong so I'm considering towing it up to Advan. Might cost a few hundred but at least I know they'll look after it. No good indy's down here unfortunately |

Leave your car overnight, in the morning check each spark plug, if you have a wet one you know you have a leaky injector.
Could be a bad coil aswell I have a similar problem at the moment, seemed to happen after a custom tune. I had a broken vacuum cannister replaced and it has improved by 80%. Still eliminating all possibilities but so far does not seem to be a injector problem. |

If you leave it to sit for longer or you start it then shut it off quickly you have a good chance of leaving too much fuel in the cylinder. The car will struggle to start or fail to start altogether. Are you running a tune? I found MHD cold start is rubbish and made the car really rough on cold starts. I think it's because despite the option, the car is actually still in cold start mode (running rich) but not giving enough throttle/revs for the mode to work correctly. I thought i'd need to fork out $1500-$2000 for injectors but I removed the cold start delete option and the car is running perfectly again.

BMW down here are crap, the service guy couldn't give two shits about my car when i was stuck on the side of the road, I had booked in for them to look at it on a monday, my car stopped at albion park on the friday before and i called and asked if I can tow it to him because im stuck on the side of the road, his response was "Yeah you can tow it to me....on monday" I thought fuck that, and had it towed to advan, he never called to ask where i was on monday, they dont care. I think it was around $300 with Elchars towing from Wollongong to Advan

FWIW a lot of the USA guys are using injectors from rockauto as these are much cheaper than ECS FCPeuro etc
Apparently they work OK come with BMW labelling on the injectors... (do a search and you'll find heaps of info out there on guys using them) |
