Misfire.. Engine Malfunction

Experienced a misfire last weekend and got the Engine Malfunction - Reduce Power warning. Parked the car until I obtained OEM plugs and coils. Did the repair today and the error returned on the test drive. I know, I should have had the codes pulled... but I was sure this maintenance would solve the issue.

My car is a 2011 335is N54 with 60K on the clock. Zero mods and rarely driven in anger. I'll get codes pulled tomorrow, but any thoughts? Did I need to reset the ECU or is it more likely I have crusty valves, injector issues, etc?

Thanks for any insight. I'm just frustrated I wasn't able to to solve this. Plugs were actually quite clean for originals (except for #1)...

Codes aren't likely to tell you much more than what cylinder misfired in this case. For what it's worth, it's very rare for plugs to be the culprit. Nor is it likely a valve issue. Coils are a common problem, but I guess you've changed them all. I don't know what series injectors an '11 would have, but injectors were the main culprit of my recent misfire woes. Look up the info on how to tell which ones you have based on the index number on the side of them. Might tell you if you've got a potential problem.

FML. The only code I'm getting is the ole 30FF. I did some topside visual checks and I don't see anything out of whack.

Very grateful for any help on how diagnose further or fix.

30FF is likely a boost leak. I replaced the lines coming out of the vacuum canisters when I got the 30FF and it solved the problem.

Man I don't mean to be harsh but a topside visual check is basically worthless. Have you googled the problem and your code? Charge pipe is a common failure point that leads to that code.

30FF is a boost leak. Check your Charge Pipe thoroughly for any cracks anywhere, that stock one is a POS. Then try a diy smoke test if you cant find anything like cracked vacuum hoses etc

FWIW we have an injector recall out right now through BMWNA. If it's found to be faulty injectors they are covered under warranty...along with the FRM module.

Hootsama
I just went through this 30FF.

It was a vacuum leak.....at least for me.
I changed all of my Vacuum lines.

Size you need is 3.5mm
Get Hightemp Silicone lines from:
http://www.verociousmotorsports.com/
I got black:VMSVAC-035-BLK Verocious Silicone Vacuum Hose, Platinum Cured - Sold by the Foot Metric Size: 3.5 mm, Choose Color: Black 3.5 mm, Verocious Platinum Cured Silicone Vacuum Hose, Black

My leak was behind rear turbo.
Going to be making a DIY pretty soon on this.

Right behind OFH there are 2 vacuum lines.
From there all the way to canisters.
And to each turbo.
10 feet is enough.
Replace only the rubber......not the 2 plastic lines on top of engine.
Those are there so the engine does not burn the rubber.

I bet you hear a rattle when you release the gas pedal.
Good luck.

Really appreciate all the insight, folks. I'm digging in on it again this weekend to check vacuum lines and CP. I have WG rattle or otherwise unusual noises/symptoms. Just down on power and get the 30FF when I put much load on over ~3,500 RPMs. To be continued...

Problem identified! Charge Pipe engine side connection badly broken and disconnected. Running stock, I'm thinking the Cobb CP is a good choice. Opinions?

Yay! I got one right .

I have Cobb's CP and hasn't given me any problems, love the finish on it.....BUT most everybody has bad experiences with the install on it (I didn't thankfully) here is the thread by RSL on how to easily fix the problem.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1173851

Other options which will be the majority of opinions soon to come is the VRSF one. A very good option imo would be the ER charge pipe.

Thanks much. I'm researching now. ER looks like the one I'm after. I'm pretty leery of doing any other mods (DPs, BOVs, etc) and inviting issues, so I intend to remain stock in every other way, so I want to cleanest and most efficient replacement CP that will accommodate stock DVs, etc.

What's really disturbing is the layer of oil on the inside of the old CP. WTF?

It's oil blow by, your ic will have some oil in the piping as well fyi. You can get an oil catch can (BMS or Mishimoto) to help that out

Thank you. I'm relieved. Bad enough that my supposed misfire was actually the explosion of my CP, at 60K non-modded and relatively tame miles (garage kept, never tracked, etc.). Really disappointing that such a failure would occur, but gotta pay to play, I guess.

Super frustrated to receive my $400 EV charge pipe... with zero installation info and not compatible with stock DVs. Contrary to the pictures on the EV site. Super. Weak.

Your ER charge pipe you mean? ER makes many different variations for either stock dv's, bov or combo of both with meth bungs. They should have had a place for you to order the correct application one, not sure if you ordered online or over the phone...but ER is one of the best. Contact them and let them know, I'm sure they'll set you straight

This is on me. My daughter apparently got into the box and made off with the bag containing clamps and instructions. I haven't done the install, but I'm already impressed with the product quality.

The saga continues... Carefully installed the ER charge pipe (great piece of hardware and a super straightforward install, BTW). Took the car out after and she was like new again, except for an interesting "whirring" sound I could hear at lower speed and low throttle.

She pulled great and seemed like the story was over. Nope. While running at highway speed, I got the SES light, Egine Malfunction and it went into severe limp mode. As I was nursing it off the highway into a parking lot, the throttle was mysteriously bouncing up and down until I shut it down. It threw a 2ADF code (idle issue) and wouldn't even go into gear without stalling. After some time, this subsided, I cleared the codes and carefully got her home. SES came back on and I can't imagine what the hell has gone wrong. Tearing it down tomorrow to inspect, but FML.

Oh shit....did you install the O-ring properly, and not end up sucking it through the TB?

I was very careful seating the o-ring into the slot and making sure the CP was correctly connected, esp at the TB c-clamp. I'll be double-checking vac lines around the DVs as well, because that seems to be the most non-stock part of the EV CP layout.
