Long story short, this 2009 E92 with M-Sport package and MT belonged to my daughter and son-in-law. They bought it as a CPO vehicle about five years ago and I’ve done almost all the repairs and maintenance to date. At 100K miles I did the OFHG, valve cover seals, belt and tensioner, spark plugs, etc.
They took in for something (Can’t remember why) and BMW wanted $8,800 to replace the turbos due to oil leaks. They were going to give the car to charity but since they didn’t really want to mess with it I offered them $10 and they accepted.
I’ve rebuilt the turbos (RB CHRAs), replaced the oil pan gasket, walnut blasted the intakes and replaced the VANOS solenoids. I’ve put about 500 miles on the car since completing that work and the car runs like new. Sooooo, I’ve got a really nice car that I’m planning to keep for quite a while and enjoy.
The one thing I’ve still got to figure out is INPA and coding a new injector I installed. Just haven’t had time to figure that out. I’m also going to be doing carbon fiber vinyl wrap in the next week or two to cover up the wood interior that has some cosmetic flaws. I’ll post pics when done.
I’m also having the wheels powder coated since they have the normal wear associated with 130K miles. Can’t wait to get them installed shortly. I’ve got two sets of the 193s so I may powder coat the second pair a different color and see which set I like best.
It’s a fun project and saves a car that might otherwise be headed to the junkyard for a part out. It also is an example of the reason being able to DIY is important for maintaining these cars at a reasonable price. All in I’m at about $2,000.
Here’s a few pics of the car undergoing all the work.
A lot of the parts, but not all. Deconstruction complete:
Subframe dropped for oil pan gasket replacement, and to make turbo removal/installation a LOT easier:
