Went in for the ticking noice and they tried the bleed a couple of times. The replaced my cylinder head a few weeks ago, and the ticking has been gone since. Haven't done a lot of miles on the new head (have been travelling on business) but will see how it works out over the coming weeks. Still idles a little rough for a straight-six, but that may be the nature of the beast.
Dealer (Ottos in Ottawa) was actually quite helpful through all of this and may be turning around my negative opinion on BMW dealers.

Mine started ticking recently and took it to the local dealer, they had a new head in stock and are replacing it as we speak. SA told me the bleed down method BMW recommends first does not work.
He told me this dealer alone has done approx 20 heads in the last three months. Fast service, I just took it in yesterday! |

Engine Ticking Noise
I had the head replaced on my 2006 330i 2 weeks ago and all is fine. I also have a 2006 Z4 and had it's head replaced 3 weeks ago. I have a whistling noise under low speed acceleration on the Z4 and may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Looks like I'll be calling my dealer on this soon if I can't find it myself.

Can anyone be more specific about this ticking? Is it constant? How loud is it? Does it
occur only at startup and when the car is cold? What's the difference with the new cylinder head? Mine ticks and was whistling. The whistling was quite bad until they replaced the alternator. Not it's much much better. Ticking still there but techs saying it's normal |

ticking
Hmmm... mine started ticking last night from a cold engine and it's an 08 328i... Are 08's affected by this cylinder head issue or did they fix it in '08?

It has been several months since I had the cylinder head replacement done on my car and all is well. The dealership was very well aware of the issue and didn't give me any grief. They had my car for about 10 days. |

Same here, SA told me the oil ports that feed the lifters are larger on the new head. BMW is well aware of the problem but will not do a recall as this is costing them $$$$
Thankfully my ticking has not come back. |

Replaced head and no ticking yet.
The ticking is usually a symption on cars which are driven at low rpms (Think A/T + urban) and/or for short periods. Manual transmission cars don't usually have this problem because they're driven at a higher rpm (driver shifts higher in the rpm range). |

So it's been over a month and a couple thousand KMs, and all is well.
A couple of days after the repair, I started having a hesitation problem. Ottos got me back in very fast (thanks Greg!) and solved the problem, which turned out to be a cracked spark plug. As I commented immediately after the repair, the car still idles rougher than I'm used to with straight-sixes, but has been driving great with no unusual ticking noises.
