Unhappy Bad Day Yesterday....

The Mrs' father (he's 80) is in hospital with a crushed vertebrae after continually falling over at home and Monday night he fell and hit is head on the coffee table and cut his nose, a right mess.
Yesterday morning he was in so much pain they gave him an epidrural which helped a bit but by the afternoon he needed another one. But after this one was administered he took a turn for the worse and went pale and was in and out of conciousness. Apparently some of the serum went to his brain which is possible when injecting into the spinal area. Needless to say my missus was very upset as she was there when it happened. So I left work immediately and foot down headed to the hospital, typically I got stopped for speeding on the way (101kph in an 80 zone in the country) 100 euro fine. I was not happy.
Anyway got to the hospital and he was in intensive care, he did not look good although he was concious, wasnt speaking just mumbling.

The reason for this post is if any of you have any medical knowledge as to the implications of this serum entering the brain, is it just like an anaesthetic that will wear off or is it more permanent ?

I will have a search on the Net meanwhile....

thanks in advance

I'm not medical in the slightest but just wanted to say sorry to hear the news. To be stopped on the way for speeding is not what you need either - did you explain to them where you were going and why?

Thanks Paul, yes I did tell them but I think they must have thought I was trying on as most people would probably do, but in this case it was for real !

ive searched the net and it seems that it could hopefully be only a temporary 'block', we will have to see how today goes.

cheers

There are a few medical people on the main (non uk) off topic forum - you may get a more definitive answer there?

Sorry to hear about your father-in-law Andy. Hope he recovers soon. I have an elderly relative and they can be a cause for concern but you have to do your best for them. Don't know anything about the effects of the drugs I'm afraid, but sounds like you're doing some research.

Dr Crap is a new member on here and has offered his medical advice, so maybe he'll be along later.

Hi BB, thanks alot, have just got word that he is sitting up in bed and moaning where his plasma tv has gone (they moved him to ICU)
So sounds like he is getting back to normal if he is moaning
Apparently he is having an operation tomorrow dont know what exactly yet though.

Dr Crap kindly PM'd me thanks.

Andy, that all sounds very promising then

Know what you mean about the moaning as well, is it the repetative variety about the same thing that is currently in his head bless him! Drives you bloody mad, but I suppose it could be us one day

They pressumably believe he's well enough for an operation, which is good news.

Thanks Paul, went to see him this evening and he was a lot better, out of ICU now and back in his own room with his beloved TV bless him.

Amazing how different he was to last night, thought he was at death's door..

cheers
