A 4 stroke engine has cylinders with pistons in them and oil beneath the pistons in the pan. The four cycles of combustion are as follows. During the first cycle INTAKE, the piston moves downward and pulls in the air/fuel mixture. During the COMPRESSION cycle the piston moves upward and squeezes the mixture for a bigger bang. Pistons are not airtight, they are sealed against the cylinder walls by overlapping piston rings on the head of the piston itself but still some air/fuel gets past them and into the oil pan which is beneath. Then on the POWER cycle when the piston reaches full compression it's ignited via spark, again this pushes more gasses and exhaust to blow past the piston rings into the oil below. Finally you have the EXHAUST cycle which opens up the exhaust valves and as the piston moves up upward it helps expel the burnt air/fuel. Fuel cleaners break down carbon buildup etc. which gets into the oil. They also are so strong that it breaks down the oil as well when it gets into. Hence, change the oil after using any fuel system cleaner. |

Not sure if you were being sarcastic by breaking it down to such a basic level, but either way I appreciate the explanation. I also didn't know that they can also break down the oil. Good to know, thanks!
On a side note, I prefer to refer to the 4 cycles as follows: Suck, Squeeze, Bang, and Blow |

http://www.chevron.com/products/prod...tives/tcp.aspx The one people are talking about here is just the fuel injector cleaner. It's $6.99 at Walmart or your local auto part store and you DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT need to change oil prior to using the fuel system cleaner. Whoever told you to change your oil prior to using the cleaner is just plain . You pull the bottle into the gas tank when you are on LOW fuel and then fill up on gas. |

I love Chevron Techron and have been using it for years.
But in a few threads over the years, something about fuel system cleaners not recommended for direct injection engines, because of possible clogging of the piezo injectors? Direct injection is new to recent generation of cars, so I'm sure ubsubstantiated rumors abound aplenty. Yet because it's so new, not sure if we understand it completely. So despite using it for many years, I've been keeping my Techron bottles in storage. I fill up with Chevron anyways, so I'm still getting it in my gas anyways

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I have never used a Fuel System Cleaner before, I have 07 e90 328i and about 700 miles left before my oil change, thinking about making an appointment for Friday, my tank is about 3/4 should I wait until it hits 1/4 then add it and fill up gas or is it okay to do it at 3/4. Reading on the forums, it seems like chevron techron is the best. Do we need the 12 oz or 20 oz bottle. ?

BMW sells the exact same stuff as the techron fuel system cleaner. The bottle even looks the same! Only difference is the BMW sticker.

This is harmless and does work. I actually put seafoam all in my dads quarter million X5. At first I was like I probably wont notice anything but after like half way through the tank it become very noticeable. Acceleration was a lot smoother and just drove better. My dad noticed it right away as well and asked if I did any maintenance on it. He went out of town and I was driving it in the mean time.
I did it on my e90 and won't notice anything. I always put good gas and it was low miles. I put it every 10k on my e90 and every 5-10k on my dads X5. I usually just buy it when its buy 1 get 1 and use it every year. |
