Whats your opinion on Run flat tires? Give your application and why you think the RFTs go well/ don't go well with the car.


Im in the 2006 Sport 325I and I honestly like the run flat tires. They feel so connected to the road. The "harshness" isn't as bad as they say it is. There are here and there pot holes that make the car feel stiff, but I feel it performs great with them, even though I have not felt regular tires on the car.

I mean hey the cars were tuned to be on RFTs

I can see the use of runflats if you're going on a road trip or something, but I sure don't like paying up more for something that doesn't perform as well as ride as well as other alternatives. So i voted no. Don't hate them, just don't prefer them. xD

Both my summers and winters are non run flats and I have no spare, I'll call a towtruck or my wife to bring a wheel if I get a flat.

On my M3s no I use Pilot Sport A/S Michelins. On my E93 not exactly something you track I have found the Michelin MXM4 RFTs to be excellent in living with tires. These are 3rd gen and better than the Contil SSRs which were OEM RFTs...

My summer tires are non run flats. wait for bmw assist if i get a flat. the way i burn through summer tires buying runflats over and over would make me broke! lol

My winters are run flats. do not want to be stuck in the cold/snow

Having had 2 flats in heavy traffic jams, I can see the point of RFT. I have no doubt that they save lives.

Getting better and cheaper is all win. In the meantime, I bought sets of non-RFT.

I hate to tell you but auto mfg's dont design the suspension around tires. This is a fallacy and it's to make their tire selection sound better in addition to you having piece of mind. They use them so a spare tire is not required in addition to saving the space for a spare tire.

RFT's suck plain and simple.

had run flats and went up north.. got a flat and tire went completely flat in a matter of seconds, 100$ for towing because bmw only covers a certain amount of miles for towing.. 500$ for a new tire.. makes no sense

i recently defended RFTs on here because my RFT protected me when i got a flat at speed. While this was a nice feature, I'm getting ready to go non-RFT PSS this month (rears are gone). hoping to sell my nearly new RFT PS set for enough to offset a lot of the cost.

I think RFTs are good for certain applications (putting them on cars is not one of them).

It depends a lot on the roads you drive on. I've never been to Germany, but the roads must be as smooth as glass.

I don't really understand why so many of you guys get flats... do your roads suck that much? In Canada, I will not say we have the best roads, heck, our government spend more money planting trees and flower beds around town xD Some of the roads in the nicest neighbourhoods will be bumpy as hell but still not bad enough to warrant a flat tire. We get really bad potholes situations here too due to the weather, again, a flat is actually not at all that common (besides nails and bolts etc).

Do you guys drive too long on the tires? or do you guys hit like HUGE potholes. Or do you guys track the car hard and drive on worn sidewall tires or something? I just dont get it haha. I have been to many cities in the States as well, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, LA, Orlando (you know, all the tourist'y places) and all the roads and highway seems fine and very good (compared to Canada on the West Coast at least).

I used to be completely anti-runflat. The Potenzas on my 328 changed that after a weekend at Sebring. I was shocked at how predictable they were and much confidence I had in those tires at speed by the end of the second day. For street tires, I think I will keep them. I certainly don't mind the extra piece of mind that comes with the added expense.

Initially had Yoko S-Drives - noisy and perhaps they were getting old. Bought the tire mobility kit as a safety precaution.

Got a decent deal on used OEM runflats Potenza RE050 - quieter, but found that car likes to track into road grooves if that makes any sense. I don't see them lasting too long.

Preference for non runflats - can pick up a decent pair of performance non runflats for the same price of meh runflats.

My stock 17" Conti RFTs are the worst tires I've ever had on any vehicle. Ideal combination of harsh ride and absolutely ZERO grip, especially in the wet. I actually got sideways going around a corner at 10mph in the rain. I couldn't wait to get rid of them, and sold the half-used set for $40, which is about what they were worth.

Now I've got 17" Blizzak LM-60s for the winter, and 19" PSS for the summer (both non-RFT), and couldn't be happier.

had the 17" wheels with stock run flats and it was a very harsh ride especially here in ny with all the potholes.. upgraded to 19" wheels and am now running conti dw non run flats and i honestly believe despite going 2" bigger in rim and lower side profile on the tires the car is a little more comfortable, needless to say i will never go back to run flats
