Has anyone modified Trunk to Open Automatically?
I know its not a big deal but when I use the trunk my M5 its awesome that I just press the trunk button and the trunk swings open. It doesn't auto-close but that doesn't matter to me. Its so great when I have a box or something in my hand that's going in the trunk and I simply just tap the trunk button and it opens for me.
Has anyone done such a modification to their trunk? I'm assuming its getting stronger struts with some springs to give it enough distance stretch? I want to do it on my E91. Would appreciate any help. Something like this E46?

I'm gonna say the only reason that trunk pops all the way open is due to the green 'helper' springs.
Never saw those on a BMW before, but then I'm only familiar with 3series - are they OEM on that car? I agree that it would be great if the trunk opened the entire way as in that vid

The fiver I have has two springs on the bottom of the lid that spring it open. They unfortunately do not fit the e90 but you could probably modify them to work.

EDIT: Just got an answer back from the eBay seller: "Hi, In theory it should work, however I do not have a test car locally to try it on. It is on my to do list. I'll keep your details and if 1 crops up I'll contact you. Thanks - sf3engineering"

I've seen people do this on E9x. Someone in Europe was making a kit for a while....I want to say it was on eBay.
1) You need aftermarket struts that can be dissembled so you can slip a washer and spring onto the bottom of the strut. 2) There is a draw back....closing the trunk is much more difficult. (Similar to when you have brand new trunk struts with a CF trunk lid) EDIT: lol the kit I was referring to was posted above me |

Yes, it's been done and posted on this forum somewhere but I'm too tired to search right now.

FYI I made the above kit. It uses OEM struts (dont waste your time with aftermarket stuts, they are useless compared to OEM) and a combination of 6 springs!!!!
A new version is now available which is very easy to fit. Still on the lookout for an E91 to test on. Will bump my thread on the IRL forum and see if anyone has got one over Christmas! |

How much harder is it to close the trunk? I always use the internal handles from the shell of the boot liner on the inside of the lid and pull down..
Can this still be done? If not, it would mean you'd have to actually put your hand on the boot lid and push down? (Hard to do this when you have the CF Performance spoiler).. Look forward to feedback.. |

At first you will need to push the boot down to close it as 1: you get used to having pressure against you when closing the boot and 2: until the spring bed i and settle.
I am using a stronger spring and after 6 months and pull down using the interior liner to closer the boot. After 2 weeks you should be able to feel where and when pressure is required and even with your spoiler I dont see it being an issue. |

No, I would love to but I don't think I would mess with mine. Too risky with the roof mechanics and stuff. I do hate how heavy my trunk lid is though.

Next post is going to be about an "Auto close e9x trunk" lol..! jk, cool idea..
I like the auto foot sensor underneath even better but I don't think they make that for us E9x folks..

No, I just got so used to dragging the unconscious hookers to the back of my car instead of carrying them that I never got around to doing it
