Fault code c998

I just purchased a wifi elm 327 scanner and performed diagnostic test of my 2006 325xi using the BMWhat lite app for my iPad.

I also got a c998 fault code and can't find it in the list of fault code.

Can anyone point us in the right direction to get an idea of the problem?

This is unfortunately only the OBD codes and not the BMW fault codes list. Do you also have a link to the BMW specific DTC codes that BMWhat finds - or does the App also provide the corresponding full fault text already?

Sorry to bring back such an old thread but did you ever figure out what was wrong with the car? I also have the C998 code for wheel Tolerance control failure F-CAN but no light on the dash.

C998 code for wheel Tolerance control failure F-CAN

I still have this fault code after a new scan on June 30, 2015.

Then I was thinking, about two years ago I got a tire pressure low fault on my 2006 325xi using my ELM327 scanner. The front left was down 2 psi from the other three tires. I corrected this low tire and reset the tire monitoring function in the OBC.

Maybe the C998 fault is still left over from this low pressure situation.

I will clear the fault and drive the car for a week to see if the C998 fault reappears. I will report back also.

C998 still there

I still have the C998 fault code even after clearing it several times, checking my tire pressure and "resetting" the tire monitoring function.

An internet search comes up blank except that Pelican Parts says it has to do with the ABS/DSC system.

I believe that my system is an ABS 3 since the 2006 3 series was the first year for the Run Flat Tires(RFTs). The fault is somehow related to the "long term" comparison of the rotation of the four wheels; i.e. flat tire monitoring. The 2006 does not have a TPMS and relies on this tire rotation comparison to identify a flat tire.
Here is the description I found:
ABS 3 / DSC
The ABS 3 system added yet more features to the previous systems, such as individual wheel speed comparison over long terms. Gathering the wheel rotation data, and comparing it is accurate enough to identify differences in tyre tread wear, but its main use was as part of a tyre pressure monitoring system. Decreases in the rolling circumference of the tyre from tyre deflation could be monitored as a passive system to identify low pressure in Run Flat Tyres which would often be hard to notice otherwise.

I have checked my tire pressure and have set them to the same value but still get this fault code. Therefore, I must have a slight difference in the diameter of one or more wheel/tire combination.

I welcome any comments into my conclusion.

News on this?

Hi there,

Did you determine what the issue was?

Same code here, with no light.

Add me to the list of having a C998 error which comes back immediately upon clearing. Has anyone found a fix?

New BMW code decoder

I found a new BMW code decoder.. it is at http://bmwfault.codes.

For the C998 fault code, it shows two potential issues:

C998 DSC: Insignificant SZL fault: clear fault memory, ECU variant: dxc_70. ECU Label: Dynamic stability control EHB3

C998 SZL: Wheel speed, ECU variant:szl_60, ECU Label: Switch center, steering column

My Carly scan diagnostics shows insiginificant wheel speed tolerance problem.
Any ideas?

Thanks for checking back in on this thread. I have a brake pad sensor here in a bag that I purchased, hoping it might be the fix for the C998 error. I've yet to install it, but I figured for $5 it was worth being a "parts-swapper mechanic".

With the new info you've provided, it doesn't sound encouraging that I'm running down the right path.

Radtoleranzabgleich or wheel toleranceadjustment

I just ran a diagnostic scan with Carly Pro and my ELM327. The C998 fault shows up. It shows up in the DCS/ABS/Brake and System area. It does not show up as a fault on the car’s dash.

Originally I got this fault only in the DCS/ABS/Brake area. It indicated a wheel tolerance adjustment. I thought it meant the four vehicle running wheels. Now based on other info, I wonder if the wheel is the steering wheel. Apparently the steering wheel angle sensor or switch SZL is a know problem area.

Any comments?

I am going to my Indy and have them do a scan with their scanner. I will discuss my scan with them.

Check the Wheel Speed Sensor. If you're pulling from Carly though, I think it might identify it if that was the case.

Wheel speed sensor(s)

Aren't there four wheel speed sensors; one on each wheel? That is what I am trying to monitor. In the Carly software "parameters" area, I don't see wheel speed sensor(s).

It's called a wheel speed sensor, but it really has more to do with the brakes. There are two modules, one in front (passenger side IIRC) and one in the back (which IIRC was the driver's side). It sits on the inside wall of the wheel well:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...0711-6241-3-02

I want to say it's the front that's usually the culprit. But anyway, cheap to check compared to a full DSC rebuild, and very cheap compared to a new unit. Others have also mentions Steering angle sensor (there's a DIY tutorial on that solution).

There are four (4) wheel speed sensors

Bluewater328,

There are total of four wheel speed sensors. Each wheel has one so that the ABS, DSC and the xDrive can function. On my 325xi the front sensors are
34526764858 and the rear are 34526764859.

Look on the RealOEM.com website in the Front and Rear suspension areas.

I think my sensors are ok as I don’t get a fault on my dash. I think that the cogs(teeth) get gummed up and do not register all of the cogs. Finding the bad wheel(s).is what I am trying to do.

Hi
Im wondering if anyone found a fix for this issue. Same as for others C998 comes without any DSC error and i also observed that usually its after car is parked for several hours. I can clean error code in the evening and in the morning it is back without starting engine.
Frankly not a big problem, but just to have clear list.

I am trying to find the culprit to this as well.

My guess right now is a bad wheel bearing. My passenger rear is going and is making lots of noise.

When I start the car and leave as is, do a WOT pull, it feels like ABS is activating and I get a hard jolt forward.

If I disable DSC completely and a WOT pull, I don't get this lurch forward.

The fault description is a % tolerance discrepancy. My guess is the sensor or wheel bearing is not sending a solid signal to the DSC unit and it is seeing erratic signals, thinking it should activate ABS.

However, this all happened after a 6MT swap. I did not have this issue before the swap.

Strange is that error comes without even starting engine, i can clear error and after few hours it is back. Then this is not casued by eg traction. I read that for someone resetting of adaptation of transmission and transfer box worked to fix the issue, but this is different here. Anyway i did this reset and it just helped to run transmission in better way. I will dismount and clean all 4 DSC sensors, but i doubt this may help.

Do you have xDrive?

I just realized I also did xDelete after my 6MT swap. So it might be wheel spin that is causing this error for me. The wheel spin tolerance is 5% out of tolerance versus the front. IDK....

ECS shipped my order last Friday so I should be able to do my wheel bearing this weekend

It is strange yours come back, even with no driving.
