DIY: Under seats sub upgrade (see page 7 for the solution)

Hi everyone !

Today I started my under seats sub upgrade, not so easy...

Background
Hifi option in Belgium (= standard in U.S.)
Amp upgraded with DSP see previous post

Now to the sub upgrade

1- Seat removal (done in 5min) 4 torx and you're done, do not forget to unplug your battery or you will have trouble with the airbag etc... and need to get to dealer to get it reset. (thanks ebanul for the tip )

2- Now remove the sub cover the sub itself and the enclosure, again a few torx and done in 10min.

3- Here comes the fun !!
Left to right, the enclosure, original sub and the Pioneer

The depth of the sub is quite different, no need to say that the original enclosure will not match !

Indeed that does not fit as it should

See how the original sub fits ? nothing above the original enclosure, or the seat will not go back in place.

Use the original enclosure as a pattern.

Place the pattern received with the Pioneer. Mark the inside hole.

This is what you should get

Copy/Paste the piece you just have done, but this time mark the external pioneer hole.

This is what you should get

It fits the new subs quite ok but I'm not satisfied with the details but that's a first try. If it works as it should I will redo it better.

Time to see if it fits the car, ok for now

I need to place the sub and complete the enclosure but this is enough for one day... to be continued... grr, I so curious to hear it... tomorrow maybe...

Do you know the approximate volume of your enclosure? Thanks.

From the specs of the speaker you can read

Recommended Enclosure 0.15 ~ 0.5 Cubic Feet

Not sure I can match that, but I will give it a try an update the post

Can't find any, looks like the earthquake fit better but can't find the ref. Have a look on earthquake website but I do prefer the Pioneer.

I will make them fit

The sad thing... is that I have to do it twice

OMG!! I just found this thread!! I can't wait to see you finish the job!! I love mods like this!! So for us US spec cars, this is the standard stereo on the 325/328 and not the logic 7 right???

Will this do anything for the sound even if you haven't upgrade the amp?

Earthquake is definitely a better fit but the Pioneers do look a lot beefier.

Here's some info on the Earthquakes.. its not as easy as they make it sound though.

So are these plug and play pretty much?? Or do you still have to modify something?

you'll have to upgrade the amp to power the aftermarket subs, or else you won't get the best out of the subs as the factory amp doesn't have enough juice to pump those aftermarket subs

Agree, more amps to carry the higher watt subs. otherwise, it will pretty much have the same physical (sound wave) effect. if you want the car the thunder and vibrate, jack up the amps. If you have people sitting the the rear seat, the acoustics may be muted a bit. But on the otherhand, the passengers will get a nice butt massage.

I find that pointing the sub (shallow box in the trunk) towards the rear and having the acoustic bounce from that position works well.

This should be a direct swap for E90 USA standard stereo cars. The subs are 8". You need to get an external amp however as the stock amp is only 40W for std and 70W for logic 7. Even with logic 7 you need more power. I highly doubt BMW amp provides a full continuous 70watts...maybe half if that.

Just finished the job, it's indeed ALOT of work. What I've just learn is that the enclosure are not the same on both side. So you have to do the effort twice instead of one and copy / paste

I did some try, WHAOOO !! not only your ass is shaking but the whole car. I've still to find the right balance/tuning on AMP.

To be honest, I would prefer bass from the trunk like I used to have before in another car. But I wanted to keep my trunk free and have the car look like original.

To answer question in this post

- The factory sub does not handle upgraded AMP, they burn in 5secs (75rms)
- The factory amp is too small to power after market sub

So you need to change them both

More pics soon !!
