I have XM at home and Sirius in the E90. I prefer the programming on XM, but hey, that's individual preference. However as for sound quality, while they both SUCK, XM is vastly superior. I don't know what the bitrate is of the stream on a typical Sirius rock channel, but it sounds SO compressed, so lacking any dynamic range, so hollow, so... I could go on and on. It's embarrassing. If they can't stream a decent bitrate, then they should cut the number of channels offered and up the bitrate. And, as has been pointed out many times in this forum, about all it takes to block the Sirius signal is Manute Bol standing next to your car, between it and the nearest Sirius bird. Small overpass at 70 mph? Forget it, it's gonna drop out. WTF? That's hideous. Worse terrestrial repeater coverage than XM, and why the hell can they not just buffer enough of the stream in the unit to keep from getting clobbered by an overpass? Any engineers out there care to take a poke at that one?

Highly unlikely that I'll renew my Sirius subscription, though having the NFL available is a plus.. but not worth the cost of admission. The ability to burn MP3 CD's with 100+ songs ripped at a decent-quality (and VASTLY superior to Sirius) 192k bitrate has precluded my "need" for coast-to-coast tunes.

As for sat radio content I, too prefer XM....
Are you sure EVERY audio source has it's own setting? Mine doesn't

By the looks of what you like to listen to I would suggest; Sirius Hits 1 (1), The 90's (9), Jock something? (28), Area 33 (33), Hip Hop Nation (40), Shade 45 (45) and Hot Jams (50). Howard is in the 70's or 80's I think? I'm never in the car at that time to listen anyways.
howard 100 and 101. the show is on 24/7 and replayed on 100.

sound quality isn't be best. some channels sound better than others. overall, i'm pretty happy with it.

xm, not for me. one of their biggest investors is clear channel, which has ruined terrestrial radio.

I love my Sirius. Jam On 17, Raw Dog 104, Reggae 32. I'm unfamiliar with XM sound quality, so I'm blissfully unaware of what I'm missing.

I'll definitely renew, and I'll buy the portable if it's ever available. Fantastic music selections on Sirius, at the expense of sound quality. Frankly, all the music on Jam On 17 station is recorded live, so the quality isn't ususally an issue.

Here it is from the manual on page 145
Tone control
You can alter various tone settings, e.g. treble
and bass or the speed-dependent volume
increase.
The tone settings are applied to all audio
sources.
The settings are stored for the remote control
currently in use.
There's NOTHING that I saw about different tone settings for each source
Sorry this got off topic

Okay last off topic post for me... (for this thread )
I checked it during lunch and either you guys have the XXXise model (special ed.) or my car is broken. I cannot get different tone adjustments or EQ settings for my car so I'm going to guess that you guys can't either.

Sirius has had a portable device for over a year! I bought my sister one last June! I got it from Crutchfield.
I love sirius satellite radio. But, I like XM too. I just like satellite radio overall compared to AM and FM.

I never liked Howard Stern when he was on terrestrial radio. Now that he's on Sirius, I listen as frequently as possible. I'd renew it just for the Howard-related channels, coupled with Raw Dog, Blue Collar and Laugh. The music channels sound fine to me.

When I was in Sturgis, I even bought a portable Sirius radio that I mounted to my Harley for long rides. When I rode to Sturgis, there were stretches of Iowa with no terrestrial radio stations at all. The second radio only cost about $7 per month, paid one year at a time. With the cost of the radio, it was one of the cheaper things I've ever mounted to the bike, and one of the most valuable in terms of making a cross country ride easier.

I originally had XM Radio a number of years ago, it sounded like garbage. The music sounded like had traveled through a long hollow tunnel... I returned it for Sirius and while it was not CD quality, it did rival a strong FM radio without the static. I have been using an after market Sirius system and have yet to try Sirius in my 335i on order.

My perosonal experience is that Sirius had the better sound quality, maybe XM has made significant changes over the past 3 years? + Sirius is the only network to have the NFL 124, I love this channel. Also all NBA, NFL games are brodcasted on Sirius....

I am pretty sure it does. I have the standard Hi-Fi system (non L7) non-i-drive and every audio source has settings that needed to be fiddled i.e. CD, Sat radio, Free radio and Aux. I thought it was a little annoyingly redundant at first. These settings are stored in your car/key personal profiles.

I got my sirius today, and DAMN. I love it. There is a sound quality difference between SOME channels and a cd, but not huge. I recommend sirius to everyone.

How can you say that the sound quality difference between a CD and Sirius is not huge? It's bigger than huge, it's MASSIVE. Helen Keller could tell the difference it's so drastic.

You are spending too much time in your car to listen to football games.

Have xm in my other car - hate it compared to Sirius. XM they talk all the time and play mostly "B" side of records (for those of you old enough to know what a B side is)

I started out in sat radio with Sirius FM adaptor. Sounded like crap but I loved the lineup. Got a 2004 Accord, so got XM. Sounds much better. The programming is garbage and I hate the commercials. As I plan on a 335i, guess I'll be going back to Sirius this fall.

Primary reasons XM has more subscribers are simple. One, they got to the market ahead of Sirius by 12 months. Two, they got GM, the largest car manufacturer in the world.

Back in the dark ages (i.e. when I was growing up) we had vinyl records. The 45 rpm singles had the hit song on the first side ('A' side) and the song no one ever listened to the one the other. Hence the term "B side".
