MP3 playback on a dvd?

Is it true you can take out the dvd from your navi and put in a dvd with mp3 in it and play it in your car?

Yes, but you lose the nav function whilst the nav disc is out. This is Audio mp3 only - no other DVD formats recognised, no video DVDs etc....)

Also dependent on the car already having the firmware level to be mp3 compatible in the main CD drive (and changer if you have one)

Can you elaborate on this?

I am looking at getting a 2007 335i with Nav. Should I have any problems with playing MP3s from the in-dash slots or the changer?

I can't say what they will do on new models, and there has been some talk about revised nav systems coming in but this is what I understand about the recent vehicles. I cant imagine that they'd backtrack on this, but you never know.

At start of production, the non iDrive E90s supported mp3s, iDrive cars didn't.
Business nav got mp3s from Mar'05,
Pro nav got mp3s from Oct'05.
CD changer got mp3s from Mar05 (but Oct 05 with pro nav)
mp3 capability could be added by software update to cars bit built wth it.
(These dates are from a UK document posted here some time ago, and correlate with other post on this board from that time)

Once you have that compatiblity, the DVD drive should also be able to read mp3s on a data CD. However, as I say you lose the nav without the nav disc.

My solutionis that I have a CD changer with six discs of compressed audio files (each disc holds about 10 albums by the same artist). I say compressed audio as the files are mainly wma format, which the changer supports as well (with current pro nav, the dash slots do not support wma). This is also easier to navigate via the voice control, as I can select a disc (an therefore an artist) just by saying "CD 2". Try navigating dvd folders on the move with iDrive and you have a good chance of crashing!.

Theres also the ipod interface to consider purchasing, but as I must be the only human without an ipod, I skipped on that.
