Question Xdrive and M-Sport combination

Hi everybody,

A few weeks ago, someone totalled my beloved E46 with his jeep, unfortunately with me still in my car. As a result, I'm stuck without a car, and a whiplash that'll take me quite some time to get rid of.

My E46 had the M-Sport package with the 18" alloys, but fearing for my comfort I ordered my new E90 without sport package and with default 16" wheels, just to get a softer ride. I figured I could always swap the wheels later on...

... skip forward a week, and I already regret not getting the sport package, so I'm figuring out a new configuration to change my order (I still have some weeks left).

In the BMW car configurator for the 320d, there is an option to leave out the M-Sport suspension when you select the sport package, but I cannot find this option for the x-drive version.

I've read somewhere that the x-drive has it's own suspension, and therefor it cannot use the sport suspension, but I cannot find any confirmation of this on the BMW website.

Can anybody vouch for this? Does the x-drive have its own suspension, or the same suspension as either standard of sport-packaged car?

I'd really like to get the sport package, because I love the look, but for my own sake I'd rather stick with 17" wheels and no sport suspension... for now...

Thanks in advance,

Marlon

I've also read that the xdrive has it's own suspension, different from any rwd suspension. I believe it's stiffer than the normal rwd suspension, but not as sharp as the sport rwd suspension.

The xDrive does not get the m-sport suspension.
Since the xDrive is taller than the RWD models, I guess it has it own suspension.

xDrive models indeed have a specific suspension setup, which is different from RWD models and very different from RWD ZSP/ZMP models.

Ok, now I'm confused - this morning I spoke with the dealer, who thought (but wasn't sure) that there were only two types of suspension available: the default and the sport package.

Since you actually have an x-drive (nice car, by the way!), could you comment on the suspension? Is it a harder ride than the default E90?

Thanks,

Marlon

xDrive suspension is not stiff at all. It's rather floaty.

I would describe the ride as a bit harder/stiffer/more responsive than the default e90. You should test drive one yourself.

There are technically three different setups for the 3er, at least here in the U.S. (I would imagine it's the same globally). The xDrive setup is tough to describe. The ride itself is quite firm, but the car does feel a bit floaty at high speeds. Anything under 90 MPH is fine, but when you crack three digits the car doesn't feel quite as planted.

I have the 335i X Drive M Sport and it surely does ride higher but the stock suspension is certainly worthy. However, in a few days, I'm upgrading to KW V3's for the esthetic/performance balance.
