Has anyone actually damaged their engine?

Anyone out there actually done material damage to the engine itself? Exclude ruining your turbos.

I've only heard of one car out there with engine issues.... i believe it was Vince... but I can't remember the backstory.... search for posts from Vince / VK Motorworks or Motorwerks or however it's spelled... there's a thread out there....

The only reason I posted this thread was that I'm considering a piggyback (JB3, Proceed, or Standback). I'm weighing the potential to damage the engine and transmission. I can live with ~$5,000 to replace turbos after 50,000 miles or so but I couldn't live with $20,000 to replace an entire engine.

If you take good care of everything the current piggys set at moderate maps (<15psi) don't seem to cause problems yet. There are inherent cooling issues with cyl 5 & 6 that prolonged stress can cause failure.

One would like to think that the BMW Perf engine kit obviates those weaknesses.

I'd assume that an upgraded intercooler, ceramic coated downpipes, and a vented hood would help as well.

5k to replace turbos?

I've seen turbos sell for much less...

If you can afford to pay 5k, why not get dinan and not worry?

cuz Dinan only protects you for 50K miles like the factory warranty, OP is worried about long term damage beyond 50K miles... Honestly, I think if you plan to keep this car forever, you should either stay stock or invest in every possible cooling solution out there including FMIC, oil cooler, radiator, etc...

Plan on keeping it until ~80,000 miles. Part of the reason I got this car was the intrinsic "option" to tune it. Thinking about exercising said option

46k on mine, some sort of tune since 3k. No issues. I expect that to continue for at least another 46k....and certainly not have any long block issues. Expect a fuel pump or two, but otherwise nothing big.

Its not like a tune keeps your turbos working overtime 24/7. Those turbos are made with wiggle room and with highway driving im sure youll be fine. Tracking the car alot with a tune is a bit different though id say.

You have the option of BMW Performance Power Kit (plus BMW Performance Exhaust and a simple drop-in filter you should be able to get a total of ~30whp).

There is not enough history on this car to determine if there are going to be issues beyond 50K even without any mods. N54 is a fantastic engine, but who knows about it's long term reliability.

I'm at 50K in my 07. Tuned since 300 miles on the clock. And I'd argue that 50k miles on our rolling trial-and-error test bed is like 100k miles on a normal customer car. Long-term durability doesn't seem to be an issue at all.

Someone on this forum was looking for a whole new complete engine, no idea why but something happened that BMW was gonna charge him $20k for.

I've been running a tune since 1500 miles and I have 56k miles now.
I had 2 new turbos put in but it was because of my wastegates sticking.
Everything else has been great. (except for the fuel pumps of course. )

Good to hear. And I'd have to argue that the "trial and errors" during development would be a lot harder on the engine, by an order of magnitude, than the finished product.
