In the Market..

So I've been tossing around the idea of getting rid of my TDI (vw would be buying back) and getting into a 2011 335d. I've done a bit of research and talked to a few people who say they are really great cars/motors. The dpf and egr don't bother me because I would delete and tune it right away anyways. The only concern I have is with the threads I've come across with all the CBU issues/expensive cleanings, the awkward shifting trans and what seems to be quite a bit of injector failures/replacements. Is this a common issue? Are there any other specific things I should look out for when shopping around?

thanks in advance!

I heard that last months of 2011 has updated DDE software that prevents CBU... I checked mine and it is clean... So probably it is true...

That is exactly what I did. I bought a 2011 d two months ago and have loved driving this car ever sense. I think the CBU issue is a little overblown, but it is real. I have gotten quotes for CBU in the $1200-$1400 price range, so its not that bad of a service compared to the $1400 I would have to spend on a new timing belt for the Passat I will be turning in. Even if it does have CBU and needs a cleaning if you are doing deletes its going to likely be a one time deal. That being said, I just had the SES light come on in my car, so once I figure out what that is all about I may be singing a new tune. Either way, I think most issues are related to the emissions equipment.

I'd be doing all the deletes myself. Is the CBU cleaning easy enough to do yourself?

I'm a TDI convert as well...welcome. The 335D makes the little 2.0 CR seem like a underpowered 4cyl gasser. And my jetta has a malone stg 2 tune...still worlds apart.

Jetta is sitting in my yard waiting for buyback...glad Judge decided not to rule on final approval today

My jetta is also deleted and malone stage 2. From what I've heard, these 335d's have A LOT more power. Really interested in finding the one I want! Just want to make sure theres nothing I won't miss when looking one over.

Cbu is still an issue, even on the 2011s. BMW did make a software update and egr recall on all cars to reduce the problem but it's still there. Really it's unavoidable without mods as the egr circulates exhaust pre dpf which can have quite a bit of soot into the intake which mixes with ccv oil coating the intake and baking onmwith heat. I have a 2011 and it had to have a cbu cleaning at 21k miles, and my friends 2011 is in the shop now for cbu with 90k miles. My dealer sees cars all the time for cbu, even on the n57 engines (f10 535d and X5). There are a lot of Ds in the Houston area.

Common problems on these cars include and you'll find solutions with a search;
1 vibration damper failures
2 carbon build up
3 vacuum line failures
4 red boost hose failure
5 scr tank failures
6 loss of low end boost
7 glow plugs and glow plug module
8 injector failures generally related to cbu
9 oil leaks on turbo lines
10 maf failures
11 o2, nox, pressure sensor failures
12 adaptation problems with injectors
13 turbo change over valve failures (part of the loss of,low end boost suite of problems)

Plus the other e90 general problems.

But the car does not have cooling system issues or hpfp failures, or at least they are very rare.

I would recommend an abc delete if you want to keep the car fairly trouble free and prevent cbu. I have, given I had cbu cleaning at 21k miles, and every piece of my emissions system replaced multiple times and most vacuum hoses. There is only 1 company that offers a tune for the car to do deletes, I'd recommend doing it sooner rather than later in case their forced to stop selling deletes as well.

So once deleted and tuned I basically wouldn't have to worry about #2, 5, and 11 and everything else is just if it happens it happens, fix and move on

Realistically I'd budget about 2k a year for repairs and 1-2k a year for maintence so you aren't shocked when the car needs service. It's what I do, tires are expensive, etc. that way you'll be in good shape to keep the car in tip top condition. You might get buy with a it less if you diy, which I do. But I easily spend 2k a year just in tires, oil changes, etc.

Yeah, in general, an abc delete takes care of most of the expensive trouble areas on the car. The sensor failures 11 Aren't entirely eliminated with an abc delete. Though you could, but most people leave o2, maf, etc intact to optimize fuel efficiency.

Oh another I see frequently engine mounts.

But basically, it's stuff you'd expect to see on an aging car as miles pile up. Overall with the exception of emissions the d is pretty solid. The gas cars have a lot of coolant system failures, vanos problems, an seem prone to ac and alternator failures. The d is ismmune except for ac problems. But ac is common on any older car, most typical is the evaporator rots out.

No timing change services that I've seen even on 200k cars. I'd recommend trans oil service every 50-60k. But some folks will, differ. I'm doing an oil change this weeekend on my X5 and the d there after

I came from a stage 2 TDI as well and it doesn't come close to comparing to my 335, I don't know why I didn't go this route in the first place. Cant wait to get my delete done!
