Big thanks to Titium who scanned my car this weekend.
Car gave multiple codes regarding: - Eccentric Shaft Sensor - Vanos Going to call up some shops and see where to go from there. Thanks again Titum ! |

Hi all
Just thought I'd continue my issue in case someone may have an idea or able to use this thread for reference in the future. There is a mobile mechanic that often comes to the office block. He works on different makes of cars here. I noticed him before I left working on someone's car. Left the office, came back, and he was working on another car. Now, as I arrived back to the office my idle issue and high pitched whistling which hibernated throughout the whole weekend came back. Thought what the hell and decided to ask him if he could take a look. He took off the covers and pointed out a tube/nipple on the rocker cover. It is on the drivers side and towards the back. At least I think it was on the rocker cover, or it may have been very close to it. Anyway, he then placed his finger over it and sure enough the engine started to behave differently. Whistling would go away and idle would come back to normal, etc, etc. Unfortunately I had to rush back into the office and forgot to take a photo of what he was pointing out. I'll try a google image and see if I see a photo to show what it is. Any significance of his findings, or should I still go down the sensor replacement path? |

Had a look this morning at where the nozzle was.
It is a black canister next to the rocker towards the firewall on the drivers side Any idea as to what this does? |

Number 25 in this diagram indicates that something is supposed to be capped off on the 325i roughly there.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_3737 Maybe that fitting is supposed to just be capped off? See the 26, 27, 28 is greyed out for the 325i? Just saw this. Thanks bradsm87 The mechanic has ordered the part and will replace. I'm hoping this will be rid of this. Otherwise I'll be back to square one. That and will probably have to take it to a BMW Indy shop. Will update as it comes. And again, if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Thought I'd add a post in here in case anyone on E90 and/or Google happens to stumble upon this as I was able to solve this problem some months back.
And after multiple Vanos Sensor cleans, listening for leaks and even performing a smoke test on the vacuum system it all eventuated into that PCV Valve Cover Cap in the photo above, with the circled nipple, to indeed be the culprit for me. There is an orange membrane inside that cap and over time, it can deteriorate. Because of the deterioration, it would not seal properly causing the air to escape and cause the whistle. My hunch is that due to it not being sealed properly it also "messed around" with the air/fuel ratios causing the idle to "hunt" and also raising the running temperature of my car. To fix it meant a new rocker cover to the tune of about $400 to $800.00 (can't remember the exact price anymore but was for a genuine BMW rocker cover) plus whatever time it would me and my brother to install. However, I remember during the course of (what felt like) endless research I read a thread (one of many mind you) started by someone with similar symptoms/troubles on their car and deciding to replace the cap itself first. The cap can be seen in this link here: https://vanos-bmw.com/valve-cover-n5...mw-11127552281 However, I did purchase mine from a company based in Melbourne via ebay here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/272442293165 Considering that I would be up for a new rocker cover I thought it best to try this cost effective way of replacing the PCV Valve Cap first for $75.00 + $12.00 for the glue and about half an hour of time required to replace first. Saved me hundreds, dare I say thousand-odd, of $$$ and you can’t argue with that. Fortunately for me it worked and I thought I’d best share this information on here should someone come across the same symptoms as me and is looking for an alternative to replacing the rocker cover.
