JB3 USB cable routed through window

Does anyone know if the 3' extension cable is absolutely required when running the cable through the window?

Jesus crist, why can't you just pop the hood and see how far it reaches in side the car.

For the procede I have the Serial Adapter hooked up to the harness and in with the ECU. I have the USB part of the adapter sticking out of the ECU box. It's just hanging there, no problems or anything. When I data log I use a 10ft USB extension, it is more than enough but I was being safe when I got it. I route it through the top of the hood and through the passenger window and pull it tighter. I also roll up the window just perfectly until it holds the cable tight but not clamped. It works perfect.

If you want to try a 3 ft USB but don't have one, just get a string that is 3 ft and test it out.

Why not just run it through the glove box?

I don't have the USB cord yet, and when I buy it, I want to see if I need to buy the extension cord at the same time. Seriously, if I already had it, I wouldn't need to ask the question.

Also, I'd prefer not to run it through the glove box. The only thing I plan to do is datalog to see if I can use +4 boost, so the cord doesn't need to be there all the time.

I was saying use the 36" string and imagine it as the usb extension, to see if you need to get something longer. Or do you not have the JB yet?

If you don't, i'm sorry I thought you had it already.

I have the JB. It is installed. I do not have the USB cable or the extension cable. I want to know if I should buy both the USB cable AND the 3' extension cable at the same time, or if the USB cable alone will reach from the JB to the inside of the passenger compartment.

The standard BMS cable will reach through the glove box to the passenger seat.

Running the cable through the passenger window is straight up ghetto.

Ghetto yes.
Even with my cable routed through the glove box, it could be about a foot longer, it barely reaches to my laptop if I'm holding it in the drivers seat

Glovebox, there is already a hole there and everything. Not like you're punching a hole in the firewall. OP, why are you not considering the glovebox?

put it in the glove box, it works quite well and is long enough without an extension cord.

I second this. Also, when through the window you won't be able to close the window fully and will also have to get into the ECU everytime you want to take it out so it doen't look ghetto.

Unless you have a blown fuse, the dealer will never go in there. And if you can't fix a blown fuse yourself, you shouldn't be messing with the car anyways.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'm gonna need the 3' extension cord as well.

Again, I don't plan on keeping the wire installed full time . . .that is why it is not being routed through the glovebox, not because I'm incapable of doing it.

why would you want to take the wire in and out? I always left it there when I dealered it. No issue at all.

you have something wrong....there is length of the cable not used. unless they had shorter cables at sometime...

mine reaches the seat fine and I can even put the laptop sideways on the arm rest.

I am sure why you want to have it hang out of your window. Why not get a 6" USB cable from Best buy or radio shack?
