In my understanding any oil with the LL-01 rating will be fine, although some of these may have different SAE grades on the label. It may seem confusing, but the LL-01 rating is the most important thing. I asked the BMW service advisor about oil to use and he mentioned a couple without being really specific. He said "There are only a few suitable oils - one of the mobil 1 oils and the Catrol SLX professional that we sell in the shop". To put your mind at ease, why not call up the BMW service department and leave a message for someone to call you about "servicing requirements" for your car.

Interesting topic, I wouldn't have thought the oil made that much difference.

Also I have had the pleasure of making a donation to north shore BMW (Sydney) and while it was lovely and all, if someone has an alternative I would be most grateful.

I have been told that BMW has entered into a deal with Castrol and therefore all dealers use their products. However, Castrol is also said to lead to higher oil consumption. Advice I have received from an indy is that they find Mobil 1 is much better in terms of oil consumption.

I spoke with a Brisbane dealer and they informed me they use:

Shell, 5W-30, LL04 for the diesel 320d. They indicated there are a number of brands certified but were reluctant to qualify.

Do you know which Shell variant they are referring to and which you guys would recommend?

Cheers..

Any LL-04 approved Shell with 5W-30 would be fine for your car.

Oils ain't Oils said the wise man.

I wanted to run Castrol TWS Motorsport in my 335, as it's the recommended oil for M's. But buying it is a real bitch.

So I started using Castrol Edge Sport 10w 60 & change it every 7.5 to 10k. It's about $85 / 5L from Auto One so not cheap but I love the car so a few extra $

I found a Catrol Lube guide that assists with selecting the right oil:

Although more expensive I went with Shell Ultra Extra 5w-30 LLO4 for my 320D
