How long have your OEM brakes lasted?

My 2010 has 24,700kms on it now and the OBC still reads 50,000kms to go for both front and rear pads. Granted I do drive alot of uninterupted hiway kms to work but the reading has not changed in 9+ months. At this rate my brakes will last 100k!

How many KMS until you had to make your first brake swap? Please provide details on driving style, use and if you track your car.

My '97 Z3 which was driven 80% on highways & back roads still had the OEM pads when traded at 68,000 miles.

My '99 328i which was a daily driver and used perhaps 30% on the highway needed front brakes at 40,000 and rears at 48,000.

Like they say, YMMV.

I get 80,000mi out of my pads and rotors. Both front and rear.

okay let me do the math here:

just replaced my back pads (first time) 78k miles = 126k kilometers

my front pads have never been replaced and have 9mm thickness left. My CBS says 26k miles remaining so that would get my fronts to 104k miles = 167k kilometers.

I don't track my car. I do some spirited driving but pick my spots carefully and I'm probably not using my brakes too much.
My daily commute is 40 miles round-trip, steady speed for the most part; I relax and don't tailgate.

City and hiway driving at 40K miles for the E93 and I must have well over 1/2 pad life left.
For comparision I have 84K miles on my M3/4 and I have at least 20K miles left on those and that is a 97 I bought from the dealer. Multiple brake flushes however....

~90% highway driving. OEM Pads last about 60K miles. OEM Rotors last about 100K.

When I bought my CPO car, it had 60,000km (about 37k miles), and i drove the car for another 20,000km before I needed to replace the fronts, and then later the rears. So, they do seem to to last pretty long.

Sounds like OEM pads are doing a very good job.....my wife's brand new Murano needed new brakes after only 48,000 kms....ridiculous.

Pad sensor for rear pads went off today, just under 49K miles. Fronts are still going strong.

What do you guys think: should one change out the pads prematurely (to save the money on the sensor), or wait until the sensor go off then change both pads and sensor?

My CBS says I have 3000 miles to go before front pads replacement, but visually, I see there's a whole lot of ceramic left.. enough to last 15-20k miles!

You are going to need to change the sensor. The E90 version has two wires, with the first one wearing through early in order to give the CBS a data point for predicting wear/remaining life.

As for the orginal questions, 72,000 miles on the rears and 99,000 miles on the fronts. Only 30% (+/-) highway driving, but a manual transmission.

I remember the sensor being dirt cheap, anyway, so yes, change the sensor.

Sensor is $20-30 and starts wearing down when the pad is 50% worn, you cannot reset your CBS until the sensor is replaced.

123,000 miles and still on my original pads and rotors, front and rear. A lot of highway miles, but also a lot of city driving over the past 7 years. Wish my tires would last as long lol, on my 4th set.

If the sensor countdown is linear on my car I will go through the front pads in 26k kms and rears in 15k kms

WTF.

No track driving, no agressive driving. It's a daily driver to work and back.

Mine is 2007 CPO, I change Rear pads at 78K and Front at 98K. (70% Hwy, 30% City - Mileage =25.2)
Replace with OEM pads, Rotors still good. Each set cost ~$280 including Sensors which were like $10 for a pair.
Never seen any lights just during normal maintenance checkup Technician suggested to change the Pads, if one keeps driving till they are almost gone then you can damage the Rotor too and thats more Expensive to change..

I just took my car in because the brakes are causing vibration. And the dealer here in Germany said that the rotors and probably pads need to be changed and I'm only at 36,000Km! I told him that should be a warranty issue and he said absolutely no brake parts can be replaced under warranty. I don't track my car and I drive a lot of highway miles. In my mind the rotors are defective. The front brakes were noisy the first day I picked the car up (about 18 months ago) but brake noise isn't necessarily an issue. It would go away after braking a bit. So I just thought it was dirt/rust, etc. But now I guess I know that there was a defect from the beginning. BMW is on my $hit list at the moment. I need to contact the factory when I figure out how. The dealer here in Germany wants € 550 for just the front rotors!
