Real carbon fiber lamination

Anyone here has tried real carbon fiber laminating their interior trim? Or know something about it? Should I attempt it on my trim or is it too difficult?

I remember trying it on my Skyline years back. Was hardwork and I would never attempt it again lol.

I am considering getting mine done and have just got a couple of quotes to have it done professionally. They call it carbon fibre skinning.

WTF?! Why so expensive.. I know a guy close to North Weald Airfield who does custom high quality sparkling candy spray jobs etc, who offered to carbon skin my roof for £100 all in.
It's should just be as simple as layering real carbon ontop of whatever you already have, not fabricating the panel again right?

It is just laying carbon fiber over the part; it's not rebuilding the part in CF. But it's more difficult than you would think. A lot of it is because you can see the CF weave and can't really make any mistakes. I've tried in the past and flat parts aren't too bad but trying to wrap the material over corners is very hard. You also have to get the epoxy perfect.

I would be very hesitant to only pay so little for an entire roof. Here in the states, laying CF on a roof is much more. It's quite a bit of labor.

I did 2 small triangle covers on my Skyline. Was about 10 hours work all in and not a perfect job at the end of it. If I remember you had put a layer of marine varnish or similar on every half hour!

Just give them a call and they can probably quote on the trim set you have correctly, speak to Teddy, he is a good guy

To be fair there is some real high quality carbon fibre wraps on the market now which are near on identical to the real think. May be worth giving that a try.

I am considering going down the wrap route just to see if I like it before I commit to the real stuff, I figure I'll be able to recoup the cost of the wrapped one back when I sell it on. Just not sure whether to go Matt or glossy?

I got Matt in mine and it looks good. Glossy is good if you can find a wrap which looks like a clear coat Carbon Fibre opposed to a glossy print.

I wouldn't waist the time and effort and money on vinyl if you plan to do the real thing later. Vinyl looks nothing like the real stuff, it looks like... vinyl. I don't hate mine (I hate that "silver" trim) but it just looks a bit tacky.

I sort of agree. I went for a matt finish for mine which is textured and it does look okay tbh but still not great. I am either going to replace the trim completely for new or just get these professionally painted in some nice colour.

EDIT: Wrapping also takes AGES!

At the moment I'm torn between DIYing real carbon fiber skinning or piano black. It looks like both are difficult and time consuming methods to do properly.

Piano Black is lovely but shows dust, fingerprints and scratches all the time.
I polished mine about 2 years and it needs doing again.
