Anyone use Harbor Freight brake bleeder?

Anyone use this bleeder for doing there brakes on there E90?

Think this kit includes the 45mm attachment?

I know motiv is the way to go but this is local and half the price.

Opinions?

The HF one looks to be more difficult to use as you need to shove it into the reservoir. There are some youtube video reviews. It is less than $20 extra to get the Motive with the correct cap. I got mine the next day.

I used a harbor freight vacuum brake bleeder to test the vacuum on my boost solenoids. Did the trick and worked well for 25$ and of course the 20% off coupon they always have

Thanks for the reply. Yeah the HF bleeder you don’t mess with the resavior just make sure it doesn’t go empty and top it off accordingly while this pump hooks up to the lines which I’m ok with but wondering if it’s got the 45mm attachment

Also what way did you do it with the motiv? Did you leave the canister empty or did you fill it up? Some like to use them dry. And after each wheel they un pressurize than top it off. Either way works for me I just was curious of the HF bleeder

The people who use it dry just don't want to clean it afterward. I plan to use ISTA+ to cycle the ABS pump so I will put 2L of fluid in the Motive prior to kicking off that process.

suck out the old fluid from the master with a mityvac.

fill with new

pour rest of liter into pressure bleeder

put on the bleeder cap.

pressurize to 20ish psi

bleed each corner until clean fluid.

clean pressure bleeder with water and then alcohol, leave open to dry.

minimizes old fluid and new fluid mixing. fastest way to accomplish it.

you could use the bleeder dry, but then you have to be sure you don't force air into the system, and you have to undo it at the master to fill the reservoir after each wheel, which is a PITA. more pITA than just cleaning it afterwards.

also, if you're talking about this bleeder

https://www.harborfreight.com/brake-...der-92924.html

it's a vacuum bleeder that runs off your air compressor. It's not a pressure bleeder.
I am unware that HF has an actual pressure bleeder.

I own one.
a mityvac is more effective.

I've tried them all and the motive unit is worth every penny of it's price tag.

As my brake flush service approached, I bought the kit including this bleeder.

this one?
https://www.harborfreight.com/brake-...=brake+bleeder

those are both vacuum bleeders.

operation is nothing like the motive one.

trust me when I say just buy the motive one on amazon and have it in two days.

I bought many other things balking at the motive price tag, enough money that I could have just started out buying the motive one in the first place and saved myself a lot of frustration bleeding brake and clutch hydraulics over the years.

Yup that’s the one. So wait you’re saying this is a compressor bleeder? This wouldn’t work on our bmws? I’m most likely gonna pull the trigger on the motiv but just curious

I have that as well and honestly hate it. It's the same fitting for a VW in case anyone is curious.

IMO, the hose is way too long and you're literally introducing air into the reservoir than anything.

The other day, I replaced the brake pads on my 330i and decided to use it (I do have the Motive bleeder BTW). All you see is tiny air bubbles being pushed through. Stopped using it and went with the old technique of having someone press the brake pedal while I bled the fluid at the wheel hub.

If you cut the hose in half and attach it directly to the bleeder, it works much better. The black attachment that is supposed to connect to the bleeder does not make a proper seal and won't create a proper suction to extract the brake fluid.

But I've heard that the old 2-person method works better. So I usually do that method if someone else is around.

I just looked at HF and did not see a brake bleeder other than the $39 one (Mitivac's withstanding - all still vacuum type tools). You said you don't have to "mess with the reservoir", but the HF unit nsjames linked to has the second bottle which is a dispenser for the brake fluid so you don't suck the system dry with the vacuum bleeder; it auto-feeds the reservoir. That set up is way more messy than just using a pressure bleeder. As nsjames explained the use of the Motive, or any other brand of pressure bleeder, filling the bleeder prevents the brake system from being bled dry and clean up with denatured alcohol takes 5 minutes tops.

Just get the Motive unit. What nice about the Motive unit is you can order it with quick release hose attachments and Motive now offers an adapter for the BMW cooling system to pressurize the system to drain it, or check the systems health (for leaks).

ECS Tuning sells an alternative to the Motive:

BMW's official procedure still involves 2 people at the final step. First you flush with a pressurized canister like the Motive. Next you you use the ABS pump to flush (via ISTA+ for us). And finally you have someone press on the brake pedal 5 times at each wheel.

I went ahead and bought the motiv from the amazon link you supplied with a separate catch bottle.

That’s neat can you post the link for the coolant attachment?

Just go to Motive's website and find it.

if you're introducing air with your pressure bleeder you're doing it wrong.

it's as simple as that.

properly used it only feeds fluid into the reservoir.
a reservoir that should be 3/4 full with clean fluid.
I used mine the other day and flushed all four wheels in less than an hour, not a single air bubble in sight.
