Is it illegal to drive without a rear bumper?
Odd question I know but, managed to put a vertical ding in my rear bumper [ had music to loud while reversing
 ] So have taken it off tonight and want to take it into work tomorrow to respray and refit.

I expect it would be if the number plate isn't shown and if there is the possibility of sharp bits of metal exposed.
Saying that if you did get pulled, just explain that you know you shouldn't be driving around bumperless but here it is in my car Mr Officer, I'm taking it for a respray. Years ago I drove around without a front bumper for a week at least while finding a new one after my old bumper was damaged and broken in two.

Number plate is on the boot lid
 A week without a front bumper , bloody hell i thought I was pushing it driving 40 miles to work at 5am!

It is technically illegal and could carry a small fine and three points from my understanding due to the vehicle being classed as being in a dangerous condition BUT it would be down to the police officer that stops you. However as you'd be carrying the bumper in the boot with you and the time at which you were driving into work if say you'd be fine.

If you get pulled just say it happened on the way to work and it was half hanging off making it dangerous

Got stopped J13 M1 by a very understanding copper, asked for a factory tour lol cheeky git. Bumper is having a full respray as there were a couple of other patches that needed a touch up and as its free, why not!
Something very "Transformers" about them without a bumper

haha yeh mate bring it down! Found out we have a TIAG vinyl wrap in our paint shop sitting doing nothing, whole bloddy roll of 3M finest! Shame I have nothing to use it on although did consider wrapping the bumperless rear end in it
