Hi all,

My daughters learning to drive and is getting to the stage were she will ready for her test soon so we have started looking at cars for her but thought I would ask if any one is or has been in the same boat and if so who did you use for the insurance?

It really depends on what area you live in...
I know few new drivers one got a quote of £1100 and the other £2400, both were looking at a 2006 polo 1.4 tdi.

I remember getting car insurance when I first passed my test and I was 18.

My dad was the first driver with his no claims and I was 2nd driver. Worked out much cheaper and with modern day insurance companies, named drivers also earn NCD which worked out to be the most viable solution.

You can also check companies like Admiral who offer 10 month accelerated schemes which means you pay a little more than 10/12 of the total price to then benefit from a cheaper premium when it comes to renewal as you still earn 1yrs NCD.

If the daughter is the owner of the car and drives it every day then I believe this is now an offence (could be wrong), however they may potentially struggle to prove she is driving it more often..and when learning to drive with L plates and first driver in the car there would be no issue

However I always found elephant, admiral and diamond to be cheapest when I was 17, 18, 19..RAC were also fairly cheap also and had an incident solved by the RAC very efficiently and they were extremely helpful

Fronting is illegal, and insurers are aware it's what you're doing. The quote is now based on the highest risk driver, so it's no longer cheaper.

It would be very difficult for insurers to prove who the main driver was. There are many insurers who also like to install black boxes now and will reduce the premium if drivers are driving at sensible speeds.

It was also more of a common practice 8 years ago but possibly not anymore. Obviously, I would not actively encourage such behaviour.

I've only tried direct line so far and what Digi says is correct, was told that the policy has to be in the highest risks name but was pleasantly surprised by their quote as I've heard some horror prices

Been a while but, go for the more unusual cars!

5 doors rather than 3 or just a car which has less chance of being a statistic in an accident.

For example my first car was a 1.8 escort 5 door. It was 1500 a year to insure a 1.0 fiesta 3 door was 2300!!

Either way though your going to get bent over, just the way it is. Put yourself on her insurance that will knock it down a bit too.

For the young'uns I'd say the black box is cheapest. Yes it is intrusive because it records your driving style, braking, mileage etc. but the rewards are to be had. I think it may also encourage people to play it safe as they know if they make a mistake they will get penalised. Worth looking into. You have probably heard of it so not to insult your intelligence.

Always enquire about the black boxes because some of them don't track your driving style but now only track the amount of miles you do and the times of day you use them, also others may track your driving style but will not penalize you for speeding etc

Fronting isn't worthwhile any more. Admittedly when I Passed 12yrs ago when I was 17 I did take insurance out on my dads name for the first 4years but at that time it wasn't really a big deal. I think its become more of an issue in recent yrs.

Blackbox insurance will be cheaper overall, my mrs had it when she first passed and bought a Lexus (not a bad first car!) but even though she was judged to be an excellent driver her premium shot up double!

Get a multi car policy going with admiral. That's how we got the son started. £1500 for his first year with a black box fitted. He was 17 or 18 1.0 corsa worth about £500 and an insurance hotspot of a post code. Now 2 or 3 years on we still have the multi car policy he still has the corsa and it's about £600 max.
