I don't think they need coding, can't see what would need coding just that with BMW you never know.
But reading that I doubt it very much.

I would just order a new one mate, sounds like a bargain.

No coding needed. Have changed three of these in different cars with no issues. Its just a DVD player after all

Mud,

Thanks again for the detailed walk through. I've now successfully changed the DVD drive in my 55 Plate 330d. If it helps others I would add the following:-

1) I removed all necessary trim without any tools. Seemed very easy and risk free to do by hand
2) In addition to a T6 and T8 Torx screwdriver you'll need a T20 to remove the CCC Unit
3) The ribbon connection on the new DVD drive seemed slightly different. It fits fine but the connector was different I think
4) I got my drive from Cooper Cobham (part # as above) for £100.80 inc. VAT. They're refurbishing the old drives so when I return the old one I'll get £14 back I'm told.

Thanks
Steve

I tried it but it seems an awkward fit. Also the ribbon cable seems damaged. Any ideas where I can get a replacement one? Tried the stealers and they dont sell it.

What is the cause of the failure? Is it the gel heads getting hard? Perhaps may be of some use - a few companies now repair DVD drives for a lot less than £300 inc fitting.

About to attempt this on my '08 335XI. Dealership wanted $700 US for parts and labor. I'm getting the drive for around $120, and I've got all the tools. I will let you guys know how the replacement goes.

My sat nav drive has also died and after researching the problem it looks like a common problem, managed to find this place who repairs them and they have some very good reviews.

It's very easy to do, I had mine apart a few days ago. Then realised I didn't have a T6 torx driver so had to put it all back together again until I get one...

help!!!

First post, unfortunately it's a bad one.

I performed this DIY and after everything was back together, the idrive will not stop rebooting. I get the BMW logo for a few seconds...then a blank screen for a few seconds. It will repeat indefinitely.

Please, does any one have any ideas? I'm usually very handy, done a ton of stuff on my other cars. I've had the 2007 e90 335i for 2 weeks and the only thing not working on it when I bought it was the nav. The standard "please insert the dvd" with a known good dvd. I also work in IT so electronics is not a problem either for me.

Everything in the DIY steps went well up until trying it for the first time.

HELP!

It owes him £180 if you're interested?

Currently retail for £460 from BMW.

It came out of a 2010 car that was written off and the connectors were snapped on the back of the nav unit so he stripped the drives out on it

Edit: also got a whole unit that was out of a 2006 car, which I got in 2007, never did anything with it as I snapped a ribbon connector hooking the main board to the drive. Not sure what the difference is with drives but could strip that one down as well if anyone needs drives. Would help me recover some of the cost.
A 2010 car would of had the later CIC iDrive so not sure this is compatible with the earlier CCC iDrive cars....

No sound after dvd drive replaced

Hi Mud,

Thanks for sharing your photos.
I had similar problem with my sat nav, i ordered a replacement dvd drive from alibaba.
Fitted it and got my sat nav working again but no sound at all, even the gongs (warning sounds) are gone.
I removed the unit again and noticed that there is no light on any optic cable attached at the back of the unit.
Any ideas how to get my sound back please?
Thanks.

Hello guys,

The DVD player on my 330 08 is starting to show DVD error more frequently and I am thinking to change it. Some people here offer me to get just the laser lens changed. Do you recommend me better to get the DVD player off first and order a new one from the Dealer?

I am very concerned if this will fit with no more complications as the dealer told me that I will need to code the car, my car is remapped so I will lost that and also the costs will be more

Any suggestions ideas?

Thanks a lot in advance

DVD swap in progress... HELP! Cannot remove top cover...

Hi,
I am trying to remove the top cover of my cd/dvd/nav unit to replace the dvd drive. Does it require bending and forcing of the metal tabs around the of the top cover?

Figured it out...

Thanks.

You really need to pry it up and out as it is press fitted. I started with the right closest corner and worked it around counter clockwise.

CAUTION, when releasing the ribbon cable from the CCC Faceplate the ribbon holder is extremely fragile, broke mine from it being old and brittle and tiny. I shorted it out and now have no iDrive. I am posting in other electronics section.

Question cd drive replacement

Hello,
As always this forum is so awesome. Might be little out of topic but I apologize.
I'm having problem with stuck cd on my 06 330i E90. Is it possible to replace just cd drive like OP did with dvd drive? If it is possible I would really appreciate if I can get the part number.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Just to add to this glorious thread...

I just replaced my DVD drive with a new one from a BMW dealership for about $120 ish + a core charge. No coding necessary. Literally replace the broken drive and you are all set. Dealership tries to charge you for coding + labor. A professional could have this in and out in 30 minutes.
