I just purchased the Cool Carbon brake pads (David, thanks for the special!) and ECS ss brake lines for an upgrade (mostly just to do HPDE) to my '07 E92. I have 41K miles on the original pads and rotors, with the wear sensors telling me I have another 14K or so life on the originals. I do not plan to replace my rotors at this time. I have a few questions:

1. Any need to prematurely replace my rotors?

2. I plan to swap my OEM pad back onto the OEM rotors after the track season for the winter. Is that a problem?

3. After reading the brake-bedding procedure, it appears I'll need 300-500 miles to get them properly bedded? Therefore it doesn't appear I should make a swap from my original OEM pads to the new Cool Carbons a few days before an HPDE event?

4. It seems I read all the time about guys who swap pads before track days. How do they do this and keep their rotors from wearing unevenly? Or are there any other issues I should be aware of?

5. Do I need to replace the brake wear sensors when the pads are changed, or just the rotors?

6. Any idea how much it might cost in labor to swap the brake likes and pads?

1. I'm going to say no.

2. With what i hear about others swapping pads for track days it seems not, although from what i've read in some manufs. bedding procedures, Some "high speed" stops may be helpful to clear off the rotors and get fresh pad material on them.

3. If its your first time, that sounds about right, although it probably wouldn't hurt to put them on the weekend before since its the first time, (that's just me)

4. I am right there with you, curious about this.

5. If the brake warning light did not go off yet the sensors should still be ok. They only "HAVE" to be replaced when the warning goes off, which goes off because the pad wore the contact off of the sensor.

6. Has to be at least a 3 hour job, depending on labor, easily $300. (never personally done the lines so I'm not sure exactly how long they take). Brakes can be done in an hour, though it wouldn't surprise me for a shop to charge two.

Not if the pads are chemically compatible. Most high performance pads are generally compatible with the OE (typically Jurid) pads, but I've seen some cases in which they weren't. Talk to your supplier to make sure. If they are not compatible, it is a pain in the a$$ to scrub the rotors each time between swaps, so I would suggest a separate set of rotors for each compound.

Bedding in pads can be 75-80% accomplished in about 15-20 minutes, plus an overnight cooldown. This is all that is necessary to prepare for an HPDE event. Talk to EAS or Cool Carbon about the specific procedure they recommend. Always remember that proper pad bedding requires heat. 300-500 miles may burnish the two surfaces together, but you will not get a good transfer layer down onto the rotors unless controlled heat is involved.

The rotors should not wear unevenly, unless there is a mechanical issue. The compound you have chosen (Cool Carbon street pads?) is not a dedicated track pad, so you could change them at home the night before. Full track pads should be changed at the track, but not always necessary.

Pads front and rear (no rotor replacement or surfacing) should be no more than 1-1/2 hours. This includes racking the car, cleaning up the calipers and cage, greasing where necessary, applying anti-squeal as necessary, road test and pad bedding. Some shops may charge less, but then you get less as they usually shortcut something or other.
