Unhappy Rough Idling Issue 2008 LCI 318i

Hello.

I am back on this forum, I was in this forum in 2015 with a 2008 320d M sport and this platform helped me a lot with mods and engine.... anyways I'm back with a 318i 2008 LCI petrol Automatic engine..

I have had my car serviced recently well last week friday, I changed the following - sprak plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil, cabin filter

The day I collected the car and got home it seemed rough whilst I put it in R and reversed into the drive, however a day or two later it was ok, I am now getting the car shaking when I put in D or In The steptronic mode, in steptronic mode it shakes and there is a slight rattle and In D its fine until i let go of the brake and press it again. The car also rattles on start up and this is mainly when the car has warmed up.

I am not sure what the issue is, I have used a scanner tool there are no codes being thrown up or EML light on.

Can anyone help? I've done a lot of reading and think it might be the MAF?

Not a specialist so any help would be appreciated

Thanks 😊

What engine do you have? N43 or N46?

Most likely to be injectors if it's an n43 and you have no codes. Have a look at this site. It has a lot of really useful information on the n43

The rattle on startup could be the timing chain, but hard to know without hearing. They are bad for stretching and breaking the guides on your engine. Have a look at the post below

What sort of rattle is it? I'm wondering if it's something simple like a heat shield that's been disturbed during the service

If it was the injectors the car would lose oil wouldnt it? Since the service I have done 700 miles and the oil level hasnt changed. I've taken it to a local garage and he has run diagnostic on it, shows no error codes.

There are three options his stating - coilpack, injectors or ecu.

I have added fedex injector cleaner in previously to clean them out.

I don't think it is as the car struggles to start at times and shakes. At first I too thought it was a heat shield but I don't think it is

No. Faulty injectors do not make an engine use oil. You say the engine is hard to start. This maybe caused by leaking injectors. Putting injector cleaner in will not fix leaking/injectors.

N43 injectors are notorious for going bad and leaking and causing rough running and hard starting.

Is your mechanic a BMW specialist? If not i would suggest taking it to one. N43 issues can be hard to diagnose if they have no experience with them.

Thanks for getting back.

I have checked the car out myself last night it turned out the apprentice who carried out the service didn't attach the air filter box properly. The box was held on with 1 bolt, the bottom rubber mount was missing which was causing the big shakes, one of the pipes into the airfilter was loose.

I opened it all up today tighten everything put the mount on tighten all the pipes and connected it properly and wow!! Its starts perfect no noise no shudder no misfire etc.
