Which tyres guys?
Hi Gents,
So sooner than expected my rear left RFT has decided it doest like me and give me trouble by not holding pressure so it needs to go asap. As im changing from RFT I need to replace both rears so they match up. As i have just paid for the car a few months back, my pocket still dont like me, so looking for good mid range tyres. So any suggestions? My car is a 2012 320d m sport, with 255 30 19 BM rims. A recommendation garage has offered Falkan 510s for £260 pair and fitted, balanced. I'm sure I can find them a bit cheaper if I look around, but looking for other suggestions. My mate with a E46 Swears by dunlope which I may stretch for if decent price. Thank in advance, Scorp Last edited by Scorpion78; 10-06-2018 at 05:38 PM.. |

I decided to to ditch the Bridgestone RFT's soon after buying my E92, we have two other cars between my wife and I, so the 335 only covers a couple of thousand miles a year.
I was looking for a good quality mid range tyre, there seemed little point to me spending out on expensive tyres only to replace them due to old age with half the tread still on them. I have had Falken FK452 on a e46 M3 back in '06 and was very impressed with them as a good all round package, after reading reviews of the FK510's, I decided to order a set, thus far I have been very happy, a marked improvement in traction, steering feel and ride comfort over the shocking RE050A they replaced, but that's not a surprise really. Sure, Michelin Ps4s and Conti sportcontact 6's ETC.. Will have the edge, but for 99% of time you'd be hard pushed to notice the difference between a good mid range Falken, Hankook or Khumo to the premium brands. |

not a hard corneringbtyre but ive had uniroyal rainsport 3 on my last 4 cars..focus st k2 302 bhp...e46 330d 270 bhp..e90 330d 305 bhp which i own now,,and on my 335d standard which is my weekend car,,all round ie price/wet grip/dry grip..only downside is maybe hard cornering,,not as tight as say ps4 or an outright hard tyre but they are stupendous in the wet,,4 fitted for around £360 thats getting them delivered then £40 for fitting at local tyre place..255-35-18 x225-40-18...not the best wear rate but rears never last long on my cars,,around 8-9 k miles every tyre ive had..

I disagree, when I bought my 540i & my 328i they had khumo & Hankook fitted to them. Traction & grip were poor, when I changed to Michelins the difference was night & day.

Michelin PS4 all the way. The best i have used and you can't under value tyres, they are the thing that connects you to the tarmac.

Yeah the F1s are very good, I hadn't tried the asy3s but the 2s gave more grip in the cold/wet than the michelin supersports currently on the back, the F1s on rear just didn't last very long around 6k.

Thanks Drew, it's good to hear from someone who has the FK 510s, they have got some solid reviews and are within my budget, so have added them to my shortlist! |

Thanks to the rest of you gents, so I'm looking up prices on the Uniroyals, Mitchlins and Continentals...So far quite expensive for the last two but got a few more garages to try, cheers!

If you want cheap do it online. You choose a garage from a list where the tyres get delivered and then fitted to your car. Much cheaper usually.

It could also of been that the Kuhmo/Hankook were more focused towards economy or comfort, and not a UHP tyre, and you were simply asking them to do something they were not designed to do? Without subjective back to back, apples for apples testing the above statement is hard to quantify, Tyres are also a very subjective topic, some like out and out grip and anything less is not tolerated and seen as a poor performer, others (myself included) prefer a tyre that will surrender it's grip slightly earlier but in a predictable and progressive manner, horses for courses I guess. I'm not knocking the top brands, far from it, if you want the highest levels of grip, have the talent to exploit that grip and the pockets to buy it, then great, it's just for a vast percentage of the motoring population, they IMO will simply not notice the difference between the premium and mid-range tyre. On a 320d mid range tyre will be fine. However if you want a decent cheaper alternative, the eagle F1s are great and a decent price.

eh?dont matter which size engine..although it does if you drive it fast all the time...so braking in a 320d or a 335 d is the same at 100 mph,,,,the tyres are going to do the same thing..so mid range is just that mid range and dont matter about what car it is

Engine size, I would say is pretty important - bigger engine = more power (generally) = faster acceleration = greater speeds between corners = more work for the brakes and tyres, hence why higher power cars have bigger more powerful brakes.
Having said all that, unless you are an absolute maniac, the amount of traffic on our British roads means that brakes and tyres rarely get tested to their limits. Mid range tyres will be fine. I've always used them and even when I did a track day in my old Focus ST I was still able to keep up with and be faster than some M3's. There was plenty of grip to even cock a rear wheel in some of the corners. Cheap tyres though are something that should be avoided like the plague, had some on a car once and in the dry they were ok ish, but in the wet they were horrendous! |

Pretty much my thoughts I live in London and don't get to take her out much, mostly local driving and looking cool while I'm doing it, sometimes the odd motorway or two so thinking mid range for my needs.
Thanks for all the advice gents. |

not my point,,my point is braking from 100 mph,,,,dont matter what power your car has its still 100 mph and the tyres do not know what car you are in,,totally depends what youy want thogh,,if your sticking to the linit all the time id go for a wet grip biased tyre,,

I don't think it just about from what speed one brakes from, it's also about power versus grip & traction. A 335i would be a handful on mid range tyres where as a 320d not so much so.
