"Faster" cars, trying to lose me on hwy or ramps - NOT!

In my mostly-stock 2011 335d m Sport with "Chiptuning Maxchip Pro Dual" piggy-back chip tune installed (they say ~45 hp and ~70 ft/lb - I'm going to take it to a dyno here fairly soon I hope to get actual numbers) I sure do have a lot of fun trying to "pace" faster cars when I have a chance.

For example, today leaving my work at lunch - I cross an access road for about 200 feet then hit a freeway ramp, heading onto a 70 mph speed limit section of I-20 in Arlington TX.

There was a red Charger Hemi in front of me, waiting to pull onto the access road and get on the ramp, as was I. When he pulled out onto the access road out of the parking lot we were both waiting to exit, he gave it a little foot and did a little bit of a sideways drift. When I saw that, I knew he was likely to get on it at the ramp. GAME ON!!

He hit the ramp about 50 and I knew he was going to GO so I put my foot into it. He did hit it. I was staying right with him, he wasn't leaving me behind like the HP numbers in our two cars say he should have been doing.

(I have no idea if he was WOT or even knew I was chasing - so he might have not been even trying to go super fast - I have no idea.)

When we finally hit the freeway proper, we were doing about 80. The road was clear in the merging lanes, so he moved over a couple of lanes & I stayed right behind him as we hit about 85. (My radar detector had me feeling OK as it was not beeping.)

He then moved right as he was exiting about a mile past the freeway ramp entrance we had just used. I had succeeded in my test and never lost any distance from him, but I realized the fun was over.

I have done this a couple of times with other "fast moving sports cars" which zoomed past me on the hwy and I decided to play "catch" with them. So far, nothing I have played with has totally lost me.

I do this with safety in mind, not changing lanes wildly or acting like a d-bag. But heck, if I'm driving a car with potentially 300+HP and 500+ lb/ft of torque and I can't find (or afford) a good track situation, I might as well get into my foot when I can, safely, right?

It's just fun to try and see if for short bursts I can hang with cars which are potentially much faster on paper.

The diesel engine in this car is faster than the "paper" the specs are written on would indicate. Fun stuff.

Yea man, I agree... on a HWY pull, they sure as hell feel faster than their traps. I've held with and pulled a few cars that destroy the D on paper. interesting...

Watch out for Johnny Law on I-20. Arlington PD is super strict. You could go run at Kennedale 1/8th mile. My oldest brother lives about 2 miles from that track.

Agreed, I have encountered a few cars that are supposed to be faster on paper but they don't leave me in the dust.

Camaro SS

I had an SRT8 Challenger leave me off the line once though.

like others have said though, on the highway, our cars are not slouches.

I have a pretty long list of fast cars that can't escape the D as well(renntech tune + IC). Not sure I could have left them either though. It's tough in those situations though, people have varying levels of risk they will take on and not sure how "committed" they are. My favorite ones usually encounter people with faster cars but still don't know how to drive. I have seen several Porsches and vettes spin out because they do not know how to modulate power, or maybe they just over react when they realize the D is no slouch!

I walked away from a 2010 Charger HEMI (unknown mods, exhaust for sure) from a Red Light. We were dead even until I was coming to the end of 3rd gear, when I started to walk away.

I was impressed with the D's performance after I checked the Charger's specs that day to find it is rated 368 hp @ 5200 rpm 395 ft-lbs. @ 4350 rpm.

Only power modification, JBd.

FYI guys none of those chargers/challengers are fast until you get to the SRT versions (or the scat pack, which is the same 6.4L engine as the regular SRT).

Well, true, but comparing stock specs of the "slowest" Hemi:

2016 Dodge Charger 5.7L Hemi:
370 HP
395 TQ
Curb Wt: 4264

2011 BMW 335d 3.0L diesel:
265 HP
425 TQ
Curb Wt: 3825

Got me by maybe 50-60 HP (with my chip installed) but weighs at least 400 more pounds. So I can see how he wouldn't WALK us. But he should still be faster.

It is all about area under the curve and weight. The 335d makes more horsepower in the low to mid rpms. Also these Dodges carry a 400lb to 600lb weight penalty over the 335d.

A stage 2.5 335d can match or exceed a Hellcat WHP up to @ 3000rpm. If you look at power to weight ratio, the modded 335d can hold its ground up to @ 4,000. After that, the Hellcat pulls away.

What I like about the 335d is after it has held its own in the acceleration challenge, it goes back to calmly sipping diesel. Like nothing ever happened

I concur. Friend has a Challenger R/T, the stock diesel keeps up with it until 70mph.

My D after the tune pulls on him by a good amount of distance on the 1/4mi now, and I can get ahead of the SRT8s on the strip by a few car lengths as well. His car and mine dynod both the same WHP readings of 350, same dyno and same day.

Their weight is a pretty huge disadvantage.

I enjoy playing with the Mustangs and Vettes, but my absolute favorites are the big modded Diesel Trucks with stacks. I'm sure they've become accustom to stomping on lots of sports cars, and to easily walk away from them while rolling a bit of coal myself always brings about a big grin. (for me and the other driver)

My buddies' early SRT 300 walked away from mine with JBD at 100%. And my tuned SHO kills the 300.

Me too, love taking on a big truck. I pulled several car lengths in front of a Duramax on the interstate one time, but once I got to my limiter of around 130, he started catching me pretty fast. He must have been going 140-150. We had to slow when we started catching traffic but he certainly would have passed me if he had another 10 seconds or so.

I've never seen one running 150, but have seen them running 120-130 on numerous occasions. Lots of Duramax, Powerstrokes, and Cummins around here, and not just the kids. Some are built proper and will smoke (pun intended) most stock performance cars.

Agreed 100% you can drive it hard and still get close to 30mpg or more. drive a gas V8 hard and you're lucky to see high teens.

Find me another car that can run a 1/4 mile in 14 seconds and still get over 30mpg with ease. Not to mention our cars are all 5 years old!

An F30 330 comes close but doesn't have as much torque but is slower. An F30 340 drops a few mpg's but is still down on torque but is faster.

Imagine if we had an 8 speed manual transmission? Our mileage would be 2-3 mpg better easily.

My buddy has a new to him SRT-4 with upgraded FMIC, Turbo, and Diablo Tune....that little car is a BEAST.

Another buddy has a SRT-8 Charger with a cam....

My 335d is heavily modded....

Couple of quick mexico pulls to 130 - I barely beat the SRT-4, we both crushed the Charger.

I was just playing with a newer porsche 911 on the way to work today, cruising some curvy back roads, he was trying but he never made it out of sight. Im still stock (not for long tho). Absolutely love this car!
