Oil leak from valve/rocker gasket 325i 3.0. Opinions wanted
Hi all, purchased my 2nd E92, a 325i 3.0 auto 2009. Everything is great with the car except under heavy load it drops oil onto the exhaust from the valve gasket on the drivers side.
So, I've phoned two local garages I've used over the years (trusted/honest)... one says they'll just need to replace the gasket (cheap enough fix) The second said they will probably need to replace the valve cover along with the gasket (£400 for the cover from bmw plus labour) What have people had done when theirs went wrong? Does replacing just the gasket actually rectify the issue or is it just going to happen again unless I get a replacement cover? Appreciate any input, thanks! |

Sometimes you can get away with just replacing the gasket, I've done it on many cars without an issue. Sometimes it needs the whole cover as you replace the gasket and it still leaks.
I've seen in a few instances cracks in the rocker cover around cylinder 3 injector area too which then meant rocker cover replacement was required. But parts can be sourced cheaper than £400. Where are you based?

I only had the gasket replaced on mine, although I was told that should they find a crack in the rocker cover it’d have to be replaced, that was nearly two years ago now with no further leaks.

Cheers for the replys. I'm in cornwall.
I've searched for the rocker cover. BMW do 400inc vat for all parts supplied to do the job and the garage said 2 hours labour on top for the job. I've looked around. Cheapest I can find is 360 with out gasket/bolts etc. Other engines seem to be cheaper to replace this part. Obviously I'd prefer the cheaper option and glad to hear the gasket alone could be enough, tempted to try it just worried about false economies and all that. Do you have any links to cheaper covers at all? I've trawled through lots of German parts sites but havent seen anything cheaper really. Thanks again! |
