"Close Gas Cap" warning???

I keep getting this warning "Close Gas Cap" once in a while. I recently replaced the new one that I bought at the dealer.

Does anyone have the same problem? How to fix it?

Long shot, but replace the gas cap itself? I seem to recall a thread from way back when where the green section of the interior of someone's gas cap went south, and they were getting this warning.

Of course I may be completely wrong, so perhaps someone else can chime in with details?

Found this on another forum cred bimmerfest:
"I just picked up a new (16 11 1 184 731) Fuel Tank Cap.
This new one has done away w/ the oring. THere's now a large rubber donut gasket instead of the o-ring. & cap comes with a 4" tether line to keep it captive to the door lid.

Bought it local. Ordered it at 10am, p/up at noon. Paid $20.09".

As for the engine light, it will clear itself, per this :

It came up first in the search engine. Sorry e90post...

Are you turning it, till it clicks. The warning will not go out right away. The DME has to run an EVAP test. Which it has to meet so many prerequisites before it will run....Those printed drive cycles never work IMO but good luck

you could also have a slight evap leak elsewhere that is causing the issue, but don't freak out until you've had a few drive cycles.

Keep driving it. The warning light will go away after approximately 300 Miles. It happened to me about a month ago. The gas station attendant (yes in NJ you cannot pump your own gas) left the gas cap loose. After approximately 300 miles the warning light went off.

There is a plastic evap hose that rubs on a metal AC line fitting in the engine bay, the hose that connects to the evap solenoid under/near the intake manifold, this is a common source for the "very small" evap leak that can cause the close gas cap warning.

330i gas cap warning

Is there really a loose/missing gas cap warning icon on the E90 ?

I checked my owner's manual, it is not mentioned.

I see a service engine soon (or check engine light) icon, but it is not specific to a loose or missing gas cap.

I've found warnings on other BMW, but not E90.

Thanks,

Cliff

It looks like a light bulb hanging off the right rear fender. It is not shown in the 2006 Model Year owners manual.

There is a icon for it in the gauge cluster. I've seen it. Back in 2007, a mouse had chewed through one of the evap lines in my car, and I kept getting and clearing the loose gas cap icon, but I couldn't figure out what was causing the problem. I took it to the dealer finally as a warranty item, and only through a smoke test of the Evap system, did they find the leak.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
