Oil Consumption Issues
I have a 2008 E93 335i. Although I've had it for a year and a half I dont put that many miles on it. It's a weekend car and I work from home.
I bought it as a project on the cheap and have done a lot of maintenance on it. Vanos Solenoids, new plugs, new VCG, new breather and PCV valve, coils, index 12 injectors, new post cat O2 sensors, recent oil change using Mobile 1 0-40. I have probably put about a 1,000 miles on since doing all this maintenance stuff and just the other day I had a low oil indicator light and I put another quart of oil. I dont see any visible leaks of oil, no white smoke, no oil in coolent, no black smoke out exhaust(at least not anymore). Any ideas? Also Is mobile 1 0-40 have issues with oil consumption issues with our cars? Any recommendations on what oil I should be using if assuming no leaks besides Mobile 1?

Many n54s seem to burn some oil and 1 quart in 1000 miles is considered acceptable although it is a lot. If your oil pan gasket and oil filter housing gaskets aren't leaking then you're likely burning it. Some members have reported that they go through Mobil 1 more quickly than other oils so you could try something else next oil change to see if it slows the consumption.

I agree I just need to know what other oil I should try next oil change. Or what oils are less prone to oil burning not related to leaking.

I was having a comsumption of 1qt every 5,000 miles (every oil change) using amsoil. Switched to Motul and since then I have consumption of 0.5qt max in the same interval.

Did you put a full 7 quarts of oil in it when you did the oil change? I have to put all of 7 quarts in mine to get it to show 100% full following an oil and filter change.
I use Castrol Euro 0W-40 or 0W-30 synthetic (BMW LL01, made in Belgium) and use little to no oil in my '08 335i. I'm at about 6000 miles since my last oil change and my oil level indicator is one bar from the 100% full mark. |

I have the same symptoms, no smoke or mixing with the coolant, no drips on the ground. I do have an improperly torqued oil filter housing gasket (rear bolt not torqued properly) which weeps some fresh wet oil, though it's not enough to account for the drop in oil level over the mileage. I'll be trying Castrol next just to see what happens. I had a similar consumption issue in another (non-BMW) car of mine using Mobil 1, so I'm curious to see if the brand of oil has any effect. |
