No Ports In Laptop to Set Com1...?

Sup Guys,

Im really eager to begin coding. As i'm reading through the NCS_DIY.pdf it states to do the following In device manager;

a. Go to PORTS> double click on com1 > port settings tab > advanced
b. Ensure “use fifo uffers” option is marked and receive buffers and transmit buffers are both set to 8. Once that is finished press ok and exit all windows.

The device manager on my Dell Inspiron 1545 doesnt list ports. I added a post on the Dell forum and was advised that the ports entry is for parallel and serial ports, since the inspiron 1545 has neither, I won't see an entry for them.

However, im a bit confused because i have 3 USB ports on my laptop.

Has anyone had this problem? What was the workaround?

Thanks

Install Drivers (Available At FTDIchip.com, as an installer and manually with directions)
Plug in USB cable
Device Manager > COM & LPT section

Good luck.

I'll give it a shot. Is this the only option?

You aren't setting a USB port to be a COM port, you're setting a parameter in the driver for the USB cable to map to a COM port. The cable must be connected to see the settings (unless you've done the ENVVAR mods to show non-connected and hidden devices). The instructions from smooth1 are the right parameter to change.

My cable is setup on com 4. There is a file you can edit to set the com to whatever you want. I'll have to try to find the instructions I used.

You can also double click the device in device manager and hit the advanced button to change the com port for the device.

OBD.ini, I believe. Though in practice unless you've got special needs it's just easier to set your FDTI drivers to accommodate the COM1 convention.

^^^ Yeah thats it I do believe. I already had a vinyl cutter setup on my laptop running on com1 so it was easier for me to use the port that windows assigned, and just change it in the INI.
