Intermittent Car on Lift Light
After a lot of searching about this I have yet to find my exact scenario thus the new post. 2011 E92 335I auto with 8200 miles. last oil change at 5800 miles. I only drive about 5 miles a day rarely even getting it warmed up enough to get a proper electronic oil level reading. The problem is the car sits in the (now cold) garage typically from Friday afternoon through to Monday morning. If I have a quick weekend errand or evening out I just grab my wife's SUV or one of the kid's cars sitting around. Since winter has set in Northern Iowa when I start the car Monday morning I get the yellow car on the lift service light. It goes out on the way to work, 1.4 miles, and does not come on for the rest of the week since Im using the car everyday. Let it sit all weekend and the same thing starts again the following Monday. Anyone else have this? I would take it in but I have a 160 mile round trip to the dealer and so far the way it's been acting there will be NO light when I get there.

Given the little amount of driving that you do I'm guessing the car is telling you that the battery is drained below normal limits. This happened to me as well, essentially because I typically drive the car only occasionally and typically less than 10 miles to work. But I also got a "excessive battery discharge" error message as well, so I hooked up a trickle charger for a few hours and that cured it. The issue is that with all the electronics on board, and since the car stays awake for about 15 minutes after you shut it off, if you only drive 5-10 miles the battery doesn't have a chance to fully recharge. Do a lot of short trips like this, and let the car sit for several days with no activity, and eventually the battery will run out of juice.

Very good advice ChipB. I really did not think about the battery. I have not had the "excessive battery discharge" message but that could be coming. I will throw my Battery Tender on it this Friday and see what I get Monday morning.
