Changed MT Fluid to Redline D4 ATF
Shifting actually seems more notchy. Has anyone else experienced this? Thinking about switching to the D6 ATF or back to the OEM fluid. Redline actually specifies manual transmissions to use D6 ATF but some knowledgable members on here recommended D4 ATF.

I'm using D4 for the hot Arizona summers, it works well for me. It's only 10% more viscous than D6, which is a viscousity match for the OEM fluid, so not much difference, but you'd better off with D6 in Maryland.

Can't go wrong with OEM, especially on things like this. Even if you're not under warranty anymore. I've changed out my honda's MT fluid to the recommended Redline fluid for my area and it was a bad experience that had me thinking I was doing damage to my transmission. I stopped driving till I got some OEM fluids and changed back. Not going through that again.
Just wish a reputable store would sell the needed amount for a reasonable price. I can't just have hazmat sitting around and at $150 a jug where I only need @ half that, I am not just going to get rid of the unused amount. Unfortunately everyone I know that have bimmers have auto's. |

While I haven't tried the D4 or D6 fluids, changing my E46's OEM 5 speed MT fluid to Redline MTL improved the shifting, especially when cold.

Kinda off topic.
Kinda thinking the expensive oem MTF-LT-3 is so expensive just because it is made to be "LongLife". Read that the manual transmission on the 335 is the same as the M3 and BMW recommends MTF-LT-2 for the M3. Maybe the LT-2 formulation is better overall for shifting and protection so long as you're not expecting it to be a "life time" fluid? |

Doesn't the "LT" in MTF-LT-2 make it "Life Time" as well, with the same change interval? From what I've read LT-3 can replace LT-2, but not the other way around.

I was going to post a question about Redline D4 fluid because I have read mixed reviews on it- some say its fine, others say steer clear of it.
I have a 6AT 335xi at 70k miles and want to change the AT fluid and there is a level 2 transmission service kit on ECS tuning's website that I may try, unless people have had bad experiences with it. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks people. |

I tried their Sychromax, as did Mr. 5, but it didn't last long. I saw later on RP's website, Synchromax is compatible with MTF-LT-1, but not MTF-LT-2 & 3, which is what E90 transmissions use -- it's too viscous. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=sychromax |

Just to update this thread, shifting is better now that the weather is warmer so this seems climate related like AlanAZ mentioned. I will probably switch out for the D6 ATF in the fall and run that from now on.

I've been researching which manual transmission fluid to use and I see that this is a popular option - Redline's web site recommends the D6, but I've read mixed things about Redline. Any other good options?

I switched mine for d6 a year and a half ago. No issues to report here in warm or cold climates. Afterwards I found out my dealer would sell it the oem fluid if you brought them a graduated container to put it in. Ie a couple old oil bottles. Next time I may just do that... I tend to like oem fluids and parts best.

is following the OEM manual fluid?
http://www.bmwpartsweb.com/Part-Numb...c-e860602aacf1 Seems like a great deal compared to stealership charging $18 for half liter (~0.5 quart)

6mt here, I just switched to d4atf at 100k and am very happy with it. Been less than 30 degrees in Chicago, now starting to warm up to 40-50. Def Feels better that my old eom fluid.

Also 6MT, looking to get rid of some of the N-1, 1-2 notchiness of my BMW Performance SSK... Narrowed it down to MTL, D4ATF and D6ATF.
Temperate Vancouver climate and lower-level garage parked, if that makes a difference. Thoughts on which would be most appropriate?

I've found four things that together make a massive improvement to shift quality and precision:
1. Fluid change 2. CDV delete: http://www.burgertuning.com/bmscdv.html 3. Burger Motor Sport clutch stop: http://www.burgertuning.com/clutch_stop_BMW.html 4. Rogue Engineering transmission mounts: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=810291
